Rendell to pick Allentown for baseball, sources say
Williams Township site apparently eliminated by governor's decision.

By Dan Sheehan,
John M.R. Bull and Chuck Ayers Of The Morning Call

Gov. Ed Rendell has chosen Allentown as the winner of a coveted $12 million baseball stadium grant, eliminating Williams Township from contention after months of debate, sources say.

Rendell was prepared to announce that news Friday but was ill and deferred the long-awaited decision once again.

Baseball entrepreneurs Craig Stein and Joseph Finley want to build a 7,000-seat stadium that could house a Class AA team and be expanded to Class AAA specifications.

The grant would be contingent on the Legislature passing an increase in the Lehigh Valley hotel tax. That measure would help raise the matching funds.

1. Good...
That's such good news. Reading has the new civic center. Allentown needs something, too. It's gotten so bad there.
