There are admitted DUers IN 36 out of the 67 Counties of Pennsylvania.

Allegheny County is still #1 (22 DUers), Westmoreland is #2 (11 DUers) with Montgomery County 3 (9 DUers) outnumbering #4 Philadelphia (8 DUers).

My Question from November list is still unanswered:
Why is it that Allegheny County DUers keep on being added but Philadelphia just stagnates at 8?

4. I started this list in April
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 10:10 PM by happyslug
Township75 had a thread asking people which county they lived in. I took that list and organized it by Counties. Every 3-4 weeks I start a new thread here are some of my past threads: The original list was April 20, 2004, so It has been a while.

The August listing:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=175&topic_id=1700
The September listing:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=175&topic_id=1377
The Election day list:

The Thanksgiving Day List:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=175&topic_id=2810

Here is the Original County Thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=175&topic_id=401

My Recommendation is first to ask in your state forum for people to list what county their are in. If you know someone is from your state check their profile. If a city is mentioned you often have the county. If you do not know the county the city is in go to the US Post office Zip directory (http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp). I type in "Main street", and the city and it will give you the County the Street adn city is in. If "Main Street" does not work I use "First Street", and than "Washington Street". If these three do not match I use common street names for PA such as "Franklin Street" "Pittsburgh Street", "Philadlphia Street" etc. Generally one of them works for ALL of the towns in PA has at least one street named the above.

You have to type in the Street name to get the County from the Post Office. You do NOT need to type in the street Number jsut the name.

But as said elsewhere most people will tell you whcih county their are in except for people in Philadelphia who for some reason keeps it a secret that their live in Philly.

12. List of Counties without an Admitted DUer:
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 11:11 PM by happyslug
* Beaver County (City of Beaver)
* Bedford County

* Cameron County (Northern State Forest)
* Carbon County
* Clarion County (Allegheny Forest)
* Clinton County (Northern State Forest)
* Columbia County (Blue Mountain Ridge)

* Elk County (Allegheny Forest)

* Fayette County(Uniontown)
* Fulton County (Blue Mountain Ridge)

* Huntingdon County (Blue Mountain Ridge)

* Jefferson County (Allegheny Forest)
* Juniata County (Blue Mountain Ridge)

* Lawrence County (City of New Castle)
* Lebanon County
* Lehigh County (City of Allentown/Bethlehem)

* McKean County (Northern Tier County)
* Mifflin County (Blue Mountain Ridge)
* Monroe County
* Montour County (Blue Mountain Ridge)

* Northumberland County (Blue Mountain Ridge)

* Perry County (South of Blue Mountain on the Susquehanna River)
* Potter County (Northern State Forest)

* Schuylkill County
* Snyder County (Blue Mountain Ridge)

* Sullivan County
* Susquehanna County (Northern Tier County)

* Tioga County (Northern Tier County) (Northern State Forest)

* Union County

* Venango County (Allegheny Forest)
* Wayne County
* Wyoming County

Some of the people in the above counties must have access to the net, even if it is just dial up service.

"Allegheny Forest" is the Counties in Which Allegheny National Forest Exists.

"Northern State Forest" are the counties in the North Central part of the state where Various State Forests exist that together equal or exceeds Allegheny National Forest. Sometimes these are referred to a the "Endless Mountains" for the Appalachian Mountain Chain turns 90 degrees in Northern Pennsylvania. In Southern Pennsylvania the Appalachian Mountain Chain takes up about 1/3 of the distance between the West Virginia and New Jersey State lines, while the Appalachian Mountain Chain STARTS at the New Jersey/ New York Line in Northern Pennsylvania and continues 3/4 the way across the state. This is the main reason the first roads, railroads and Canals went through Southern Pennsylvania. Even today most truckers perfer the Pennyslvania Turnpike (Southern Pennsyvania Route) to Interstate 80 (Northern Pennsylvania Route) do to having to go through less mountians.

"Blue Mountain Ridge" are counties West and North of Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain is the the first Mountain Ridge West and North of Harrisburg in the Appalachian Mountain Chain. This is the first real divide in Pennsylvania.

"Northern Tier Counties" are those counties along the New York Border.

There are admitted DUers IN 37 out of the 67 Counties of Pennsylvania.

Allegheny County is still #1 (27 DUers), Westmoreland is #2 (11 DUers) with Montgomery County and Philadelphia tied for Third at 10 DUers each.

My Question from November list is still unanswered:
Why is it that Allegheny County DUers keep on being added but Philadelphia just stagnates at 10?

AND can't the DUers in the some NEW county admit what county they live in? I found Bunny (and thus added Armstrong County) by going through the "Philadelphia vs. Pittsburgh: Which is the better city?" thread.

16. To Allegheny County DUers
Edited on Tue Dec-21-04 11:27 PM by happyslug
The list of Allegheny County DUers is up to 27 people, do you what me to split Allegheny County into smaller sections? Options are as follows:

Option #1:
City of Pittsburgh
Outside of Pittsburgh

Option #2
North of the Ohio-Allegheny Rivers
South of the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers
Between the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers.

Option # 3
City of Pittsburgh
Outside of Pittsburgh but North of the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers
Outside of Pittsburgh but South of the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers
Outside of Pittsburgh but Between the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers.

I lean to the last for everyone knows that in Pittsburgh/Allegheny County you do NOT cross a River if you can help it.

If I decide to divide you will have to tell me which area you are in.

19. Forgive my ignorance
but the entire north of the rivers, south of the rivers, between the rivers is a bit much for the directionally challenged amongst us. Maybe something along the lines of "inside city limits" vs. "outside city limits - north (S, E, W, whatever)".

I have no idea where the city ends/starts based on the rivers.

22. No one else does either
Edited on Wed Dec-22-04 01:08 PM by happyslug
That is why I am leaning to Option #3, if you are in the City you state you are in the City. If you are outside the City of Pittsburgh you almost always know which rivers you are between so you can state between which rivers you are.

For Example most of the City of Pittsburgh is between the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers (For Example Downtown, Oakland, East Liberty, The Hill District etc). Some People live South of the Monongahela (South Side, Mt Washington, Beechview, Banksville, Brookline, West End etc). Other live North of the Allegheny (North Side, Manchester, etc). If you live in ANY neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh I would have you list yourself as in the City of Pittsburgh.

The other three divisions are for the Suburbs (Or for those City Residents who prefer to be listed between the Rivers).

Between the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers:
Borough of Braddock
Borough of Braddock Hills
Borough of Churchill

You can add me to the list of Allegheny County (outside the city in the Northern suburbs).

Is there a use for this list? Just wondering???

24. Basically the list is to help people organize
It is a lot easier to organize if you have an idea of who is near you. That is the sole purpose of the list. You can also cut and paste the names into E-mails to contact people on a local basis.

Thus the list has its purposes, but more for information purposes than anything else.

29. The Twelve Divisions of Allegheny County:
Allegheny Count has Pittsburgh as its Center. Pittsburgh exist do to the merger of the Allegheny and the Monongahela Rivers to form the Ohio River. The County first developed along these Rivers and than through the Chartiers and Turtle Creek Valleys. Thus you have numerous communities in these five Valleys (The Ohio River, Monongahela River, Allegheny River, Turtle Creek and Chartiers Creek Valleys).

Do to the Monongahela Escarpment Development of South Hills Suburbs were later than the East Hills. The North Hills had similar Escarpment but between the Allegheny River the Escarpment you had enough flat land to form what is now the North Side of the City of Pittsburgh before development went down the Ohio River and up McKnight Road.

The South Hills first developed NOT as a commuting Suburb of Pittsburgh, but do to the extensive Coal Deposits south of Mount Washington (The Escarpment) you had an extensive rural industrial area in what is now the South Hills of Pittsburgh (One side affect of this in th Montour Bike Trail which follows the old Montour Railroad which connected the Various South Hills Coal Mines).

In the 1800s the South Hills were connected to the Chartiers Creek Valley and the Upper Monongahela River valleys decades before commuting suburbs developed in the South Hills (Thus the crazy collection of roads in the South Hills as the Roads built in the 1800s tended to go to Carnegie and the Chartiers Valley OR to McKeesport and the Upper Monongahela.

This ended in 1900 when the Pittsburgh Railway Company drilled its Streetcar Tunnel (Now a Bus and Streetcar tunnel) replacing an old dual incline and rail system that had existed since the 1870s. This opened up the South Hills for development. This followed by the Liberty Tunnels in 1927. In 1939 Allegheny County built what is now PA 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) along the Saw Mill Run Valley. This opened up more of the South Hills for Development.

The Coal mines of the South Hills closed down after WWII so you had the new suburbs building roads designed to connect the South Hills to Carnegie or McKeesport being re-designed to connect to Saw Mill Run Boulevard and/or the Liberty Tunnels (along with the old coal roads being developed into four lane highways to get the Middle Class Steel Workers from their homes in Suburbia back to the Steel Mills in the Valleys). Thus the mess that is the South Hills of Pittsburgh Road System.

35. Allegheny County splits
Hi,

The only logical split is City vs. Suburban (or non-city). The city of Pgh is about 25% of the county. But in truth, I'd pitch for not splitting the group at all. Ours is a small city. And, we need to be more united and less into tiny groups.

Ta.
