Are there any House seats that the Dems can take?
I'm just wondering. Because if there are any contestable seats in our state, we should definitely focus on them and try to pump support into those campaigns. Anyone have any in mind?

1. Scott Garrett - Republican in New Jersey in Bergen, Passaic, and
Sussex Counties. Freshman. Extreme Neocon. Hasn't been an incumbent long enough to be guaranteed a return to Congress. Questionable support generally.

3. 3rd District in Arkansas
The Dems are running Jan Judy against R John Boozman, who has been, at the very least, rather inept. Jan is running on an anti-Bush platform, and is picking up support.

5. PA reps to US Congress
Yes, Tim Holden is a Democrat we need to retain. He's from Schuykill County and he was supposed to have been redistricted out of his seat with the addition of Dauphin and Lebanon counties, but he won the combined, heavily Republican district from George Gekas.

The Republicans just had a 6-way primary on who gets to attack Holden, and the winner at 25% or so was Scott Paterno, of the famous name. He seems inexperienced and incompetent, plus he just moved from Hampton Twp in Cumberland County across the river to Dauphin County for the purpose of running, and the newspaper ran an article saying he's never made a living and supports his family on handouts from his parents.

Holden is more conservative than I'd like, but it's amazing to have a Democrat in this seat. Let's work to keep him.

6. 15th Congressional District
Former businessman and democrat Joe Driscoll has a good chance of winning the seat vacated by Pat Toomey. I expect that the democrats might see this as a pickup and put money into the race against challenger Charlie Dent.

7. PA-6 (my district)
The district actually voted for Gore in 2000, and only voted for the Republican that's currently in there (Gerlach) 51%-49% in 2002 despite the fact that there was very little national support.

8. The Thirteenth!

We have to keep Joe Hoeffel's seat in Democratic hands. Allyson Schwartz just won the tight Dem primary race and takes on Melissa Brown in the general. Brown (who lost to Hoeffel by a fairly narrow margin last time) informed her supporters in her victory speech on primary night that she would support her President, George W. You-Know Who, "in his battle on terror anywhere in the world...in Afghanistan, Iraq, and any other country." Honest to god she said it. We need to help Allyson!!!!

Schwartz is not close enough for me to work for. However I have sent her some money. I hope you will all help get Eisenhower in. He is they liberal wing of the Eisenhower family and a really great guy.
Maybe if you are passing lit, you can pass his too.

11. Lois Murphy, 6th District
MoveOn members are excited about Lois Murphy, an attorney and long-time activist who has spent much of her career fighting for a woman's right to choose. Murphy has worked as the past president of NARAL-Pennsylvania, a member of the Pennsylvania Commission for Women, and as a trustee of the Women's Law Project. Art, of Bryn Mawr, PA, says: "She is the real thing: thoughtful, human, warm, committed to public service. I want to take back Congress from the arch-conservatives and her positions are just what we need in Congress." Lois stands a strong chance of ousting her opponent in Pennsylvania's 6th District, a first-term Republican who won in 2002 with only 51% of the vote.

Lois Murphy's campaign for the U.S. House is one of our best opportunities to win back a Republican House seat this election cycle. Murphy has spent her career fighting for women and families as the past president of NARAL-Pennsylvania, a member of the Pennsylvania Commission for Women, a trustee of the Women's Law Project, and through her legal work for both NARAL and the U.S. Justice Department's Civil Division. Murphy's campaign is focusing on job creation, the economy, health care, and the reckless fiscal policies of George W. Bush. She is a dynamic candidate who stands a strong chance of ousting her opponent, a first-term Republican who won in 2002 with only 51% of the vote.

“She is the real thing: thoughtful, human, warm, committed to public service. I want to take back congress from the arch-conservatives and her positions are just what we need representing us.” - Art, Bryn Mawr, PA

12. Lois Herr, 16th District
Saturday, June 12, 2004

Lois Herr

Lois Herr is a member of the third Dean Dozen.

I first felt the drive to run for public office in January of this
year, after I joined many of you to walk the cold streets of New
Hampshire and Iowa in support of Gov. Dean. Though I've been an
activist my whole life, fighting for equality in the workplace and for
social change on behalf of women and minorities, the phrase "Lois Herr
for Congress" never crossed my mind. But while the cold wind numbed my
hands and feet, it heightened my sense of duty to stand up and join the fight to take back this country in any way possible. Once I accepted
the challenge of running for office, in Pennsylvania's 16th
Congressional district, I found amazing encouragement from everyone I
talked to about running and have been on a whirl-wind journey ever
since.

As Gov. Dean has always insisted, this election year demands dramatic
action on the behalf of the common good. George W. Bush and his cronies
in Washington, like my ultra-conservative opponent Joe Pitts, are
quickly taking away our rights and our honor. After the disastrous
handling of the Iraq war and its aftermath, Americans are having
trouble holding their head high. Here at home, we are still not fully
funding our children's schools, our parents' prescription drug costs or our neighbors' healthcare. Our factories are losing jobs overseas, gays and lesbians still can not exercise the right to live in a
government-sanctioned union and a woman's right to choose her own
reproductive freedom grows more threatened every day.

Frustrating as these realities may be, they do not have to be our
reality. We can pass on a more free, stable and prosperous America to
our children's generation, but it will take commitment. I have
committed to running for Congress and no matter what challenge I face,
I commit to a progressive and people-oriented campaign. I commit to
focusing on granting security to seniors, creating jobs and engaging
America in the world as a powerful partner, not simply a war power. I
commit to throwing myself in the path of those who would take away a
woman's right to choose and above all, I commit to taking this country
back!

I am honored that Gov. Dean and Democracy for America have also made a
commitment -- in this instance, to my campaign. Their support will be
invaluable to my staff and our momentum, but best of all, it allows me
the opportunity to reach out to you directly. Now, I ask you to commit
to me as well. We have set our goals at an achievable level. We will
register 50,000 new voters in the 16th district. We will identify
enough supporters to insure a 50% plus 1 turnout on November 2nd.
Together, we can defeat one of George Bush's closest and most loyal
allies!

Please visit my website at www.loisherr.us or send an email to
info@loisherr.us to join our commitment to taking back America.

13. We should be able to take the 18th back from Murphy
however that means we need to get all the democrats out to vote for Boles...who is a really nice guy.
There are more registered dems in that district so if murphy wins it is because dems voted for him...so we should win it hands down if people voted straight ticket in November...

14. Lois Murphy, PA-6
Lois is raising money hand over fist, has an Emily's List endorsement and her opponent incumbent has about a 20% name recognition in his district. It's a conservative-leaning district, but she has a shot.
