Who is this POS?
Edited on Thu Aug-18-05 03:56 PM by votesomemore
Alan Sager, chairman of the Travis County Republican Party, who did not attend the vigil, said it was counterproductive.

"They ought to be careful they're not encouraging more Americans or Iraqis to die by encouraging the Islamic fascists, the terrorists, to think we're going to leave soon," he said. "It bothers me (Sheehan) has crowned herself queen of the Gold Star mothers when she doesn't have permission to represent them."

And is there any way to get him out of "office"?

3. Crowned herself queen of Gold Star Mothers?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that she started the group.

And to add, if the insurgents thought we were leaving, a million to one they'd quit bombing us.

5. Wright is WRONG Eddie!
After 26 years, the Wright Amendment is an anti-competitive relic. Once passed as a federal law designed to protect a fledgling DFW International Airport, it has clearly out-served its purpose. It now deprives the people of Texas from enjoying the wide variety of low fares that other cities take for granted.

While both Southwest and American have the majority of flights out of Love Field and DFW, respectively, the similarity ends there. The difference? For one; passenger traffic has declined significantly since Sept. 11, 2001, in shorthaul markets-the only kind of markets Southwest can legally serve from Love Field under the Wright Amendment. The automobile has returned as a serious competitor to the airplane. American Airlines, however, is free to serve any markets it chooses. Southwest has consistently provided low fares and fast, efficient service from Love Field for 34 years while American Airlines holds its passengers hostage by making them pay high fares in cities where they do not compete with a low fare carrier. Because of American Airlines’ monopoly at DFW, consumers in North Texas pay an average business fare that is 48 percent higher than at other airports across America.

Love Field is not a threat to DFW, which is the second largest airport in the world in terms of landings and the third busiest in terms of flight operations. DFW served 53 million passengers last year from 140 gates, and is growing. American Airlines has already seen its traffic increase since Delta's downsizing and alone will have nearly 900 flights from DFW by July 2005-up from 700 flights in 2004, thereby replacing the majority of the flights lost by Delta's departure. By contrast, Southwest offers 117 daily departures from Love Field and openly supports the Love Field Master Plan that caps the number of gates at 32 so that it cannot grow beyond what its location will allow. Love Field is, and will remain, a puny rival to DFW in the size and scope of operations. But what it can do is lower fares on all airlines (including those at DFW) and increase the number of air travelers and airport revenues at both airports by allowing Southwest to enter into medium and longhaul flights from Love Field. This is not speculation, but a historical fact that has occurred at every single new market we have entered and has been labeled by the U.S. Department of Transportation as the "The Southwest Effect."

Southwest Airlines is a Company of proud Americans, being profitable for the past 32 years, and it is the only consistently profitable carrier since 9/11. We were founded on the premise that all Americans deserve the ability to enjoy affordable air fares, no matter where they fly.
It's time to repeal the Wright Amendment!

8. If you are referring to Congresswoman Johnson,
she prefers "Eddie Bernice."

The tack she is taking is that the Wright Amendment is the only thing that is allowing Love Field to remain open at all, and it is a historical fact that Love Field actually should have been closed back when DFW opened, and was only allowed to remain open as a short-haul airport, *because* of the Wright Amendment.

She also argues that it is a safety issue to have such an airport open in a heavily populated residential part of a city, and that to allow Southwest to operate long haul flights out of Love would only increase the safety risks to the residents of that area of the city as the aircraft get bigger and the tonnes of jet fuel required to take off get higher.

What would your response to her be on that?

and I'm no expert on the matter, but I would think if a jet can hold enough fuel to get to El Paso, surely they could go ahead and make it to Phoenix. As one who had to work with this little scheme on many occasions . hop over to El Paso . then Albuquerque . or Phoenix . then to destination, I think it sux big time. Safety risks? Like DFW isn't in the midst of a heavily populated area?

I believe this poster is correct. It was a political move to protect DFW in its fledgling. The first flight I EVER took, some 35 years ago, I flew from Tucson into Love Field. No danger there, eh?

The Wright law has been a pain in the arse from conception. Known fact. Poor Eddie B. What is her agenda?

EDIT: Oh and that part of the city has gone to the dogs. Unfortunately. I used to skate around Bachman lake, lived down the street. Do not recommend that these days. I wish they would revitilize that area.

10. Heh. There are some other threads in this forum
that postulate what her agenda is. I haven't made up my mind myself yet about this whole thing. :P

I dunno, I have absolutely no dog in this fight since I (1) don't regularly fly out of Love and (2) don't live anywhere near Love.

That said, it takes a heckuva a lot more fuel and a much larger jet to go to Los Angeles or New York than it does to El Paso, that's a given. And, yes, the area around Love Field has a far, far higher population density than that around DFW.

11. Here ya go, population density map
From:

Looks a lot more dense around Love than around DFW by a factor of, like, a lot. :P

Now I live in Austin. SW can fly anywhere they want. I just always thought the Wright deal was protectionism and stupid. This battle has been raging for years. I think the voters should decide.
