Parks commission rejects sale of Big Bend land

AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission today unanimously rejected a proposal to sell about 46,000 acres of Big Bend Ranch State Park to an adjacent land owner.

John Poindexter, owner of Cibolo Creek Ranch north of the park, offered about $2 million for the land. He also agreed to protect and restore its cultural and natural resources and help the state buy land within the park that's currently owned by outsiders.

The 8-0 vote came after three hours of questions from commissioners and impassioned testimony from more than two dozen individuals and representatives of environmental and historical groups...cont'd

Texas may sell part of Big Bend Ranch State Park

...Ken Kramer of the Sierra Club said what bothers him most is the secrecy surrounding the possible sale.

"To have something like this happen without public discussion is bad public policy," he said.
