Local station refuses to run pro-DeLay ad
The commercial will be broadcast on cable channels

WASHINGTON - Another day, another Tom DeLay ad, another rejection.

After four Houston TV stations initially refused last month to show an ad criticizing the Republican House member from Sugar Land, at least one local station is refusing to run a new spot that promotes the lawmaker and attacks a prominent supporter of the Democrats.

"We have chosen not to take the spot in its current form," said D'Artagnan Bebel, vice president and general manager of the local Fox affiliate, KRIV (Channel 26). He would not elaborate on why.

Representatives from KTRK (Channel 13) and KHOU (Channel 11) were unavailable for comment. KPRC (Channel 2) General Manager Larry Blackerby said he was unaware of it.

The ad is slated to run on CNN and Fox News in and around DeLay's suburban Houston district, starting today and running for two weeks.

The 30-second spot from the conservative Free Enterprise Committee attacks billionaire financier and Democratic supporter George Soros for spending "$25 million against President Bush. He also bankrolled the liberals linked to attacks on Tom DeLay."

5. I wonder how soon they get calls from Roger Ailes...
... and perhaps there will be some "firings" just like we had with those "rogue" journalists that tried to expose Monsanto in a newly aquired Fox affiliate in Florida a while back. Can't let those affiliates get that uppity and do their own thing now!

6. When are the Dems going to start running ads attacking Richard Scaife?
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1998/04/27/scaife.profile/

WASHINGTON (April 27, 1998) -- Who is Richard Scaife? He's a 65-year-old billionaire Republican wielding power from the shadows.

According to President Bill Clinton's allies, he's the main money man behind a right-wing anti-Clinton conspiracy, attacking with his money. Former White House counsel Lanny Davis argues, "He's using it to destroy a president of the United States."

If it's a conspiracy, it's a pretty open one. Scaife's tax-exempt foundations disclose their grants on the Web <http://www.scaife.org>. Among them: $2.4 million over several years to American Spectator to pay for anti-Clinton reporting, even a private eye to dig up dirt. And millions more went to other anti-Clinton groups.

snip

Today he owns a newspaper, Pittsburgh's second largest, the Tribune-Review. But he has made his main mark not as a media baron, but by financing Republican politics.

snip

Is Richard Scaife great and powerful or just the man behind the curtain?
That's a matter of opinion. But it is a fact this billionaire has spent millions in tax-free money attacking the current occupants of the White House.

Lot's more at the link or if you google him. Note that this article is from 1998. Scaife must be about 73 now. And it is Richard Mellon Scaife -- it was inherited wealth that gave him his start.

11. Scaife should go hunting with Dick Cheney
He's about the right age. Five straight whole days with no reported incidents of the vice president shooting an elderly man in the face. How long can Cheney go without going stir crazy?

Kudos to Jon Stewart for his continuing "Vice President Dick Cheney, shot a 78 year old man in the face" gag.

12. You beat me to the Money Man/Propagandist Scaife
David Brock used to work for the Slime of Smear, Scaife. He played along until he started writing his book on Hillary (that was being funded by Scaife), wonder if he got paid after refusing to play.
At that point in his life, he found that he has morals and ethics, and wouldn't play there game anymore.
He saw the light that he had been missing for shoving his head where the sun don't shine.

Now he is the founder of Media Matters for America. He exposes everything the Corporate Media neglects to address and I say good for him and all the other hard workers who can sit through all the Corporate Cable News to keep us informed.

I'm on his email list and I must admit, they rarely let anything slip through the muck.

But I agree if the Repubs want to play the Soros funds the left, then it's only fair to point out that Scaife funds the right. The Tribune-Review is the paper that Teresa Kerry told the "reporter" to "Go Shove It", by the way. :applause:

15. Every time I hear the MSM start in on Soros my blood starts to boil
because they have really given Scaife and others a pass over the years. You sure know way more than I do on the topic, MagickMuffin. I didn't know the whole David Brock story. Thanks for all the info. :D

17. Glad to be informative
I couldn't stand Brock before he saw the light. And now that he can see clearly again, well what can I say except I adore him for all that he is doing to let people know what the right-wing smear machine is up too.

Just in case anyone hasn't been to his website link:

http://mediamatters.org/

Media Matters now has video clips, as well as all the info from the corporate cable news, newspaper articles, talk radio broadcast and what has been said regarding the falsehoods of the right.

Brock is also a regular on the Al Franken Show with his very own song. We will, We will Brock you. A parody of the We Will Rock You, by Queen. Very funny IMHO:evilgrin:

10. Trouble with link above - here's a correct one
Chronicle story link
The new ad features pictures of a bewildered-looking Soros followed by a smiling DeLay. "When you see attacks on DeLay, consider the source," it says. "And tell Tom DeLay to keep fighting for your conservative values."

 Tom, I will consider the source. Any attack on you, king of corruption, is probably a valid source. Running scared are we bugman?,

14. Doesn't anyone see this kind of censorship as problematic?
Not ADDING a disclaimer.
Instead,
Complete censorship.

This says censorship is in the hands of unelected people.
Censorship in the hands of elected officials is bad enough.

This is worse.

18. We'll need more than "once" for the fight back.
They have fought for unfairness.
And, now, they want to ENFORCE unfairness.

Bad precedent.

20. KHOU ran it this morning
in between Sunday Morning and Face the Nation at 9:30.

Pretty much the kind of slanderous attack you'd expect from the right-wing hyenas.
