1. Daayuumm! I'd seen DVO speak before, but today he was white hot!
He stirs the soul, like Dean did for me in 2003. Robber barons, watch out.

29. Any way to get a transcript of David's speech?
I was going to go to the Convention but had to change plans in April.

4. Yes of course with Hank Gilbert a very close second
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 11:01 PM by sonias
I love that duo!! David had the best visuals with the Texas flag waving and the Big Oil I'm coming after you signs. Really nice intro by former Attorney General Jim Mattox.

I know there were some people taping (LiveOakTx), so I expect that sometime next week we might see some of this on CanOFun. Please, please let it be so.

5. I wish I was there!!!!
I adore DVO (I am actually wearing a DVO shirt at the moment!), and was completely taken with him the very first time I ever heard him speak. He is full of fire and passion for justice, and makes me feel like it's really worth continuing the fight!

10. not for me
I would have said that maybe Chet Edwards' speech was the one I enjoyed the most, because it said things people really needed to know and wasn't another "empty platitudes and rah rah" type of speech.

At all these conventions we hear speech after speech about how we have a strong ticket, we're going to elect them, etc. etc. but in truth, I don't see many of these candidates crossing 35%. That might be enough to win the governorship in this bizarre election year, but certainly not even close to anything else. This is not a strong ticket at all!

Did the state party find any candidates besides Chris?

Did the party go looking for candidates or groom them?

Edited on Sun Jun-11-06 01:38 PM by sonias
Congratulations on being a naysayer. With your faith the party will always be irrelevant. You must agree with Kelly Fero's sentiment that the party functions best when it's irrelevant. Never mind that the overwhelming majority of people in the Texas forum of DU actually are out there working for grassroots candidates and working to fix the party from within.

What a surprise huh? That these candidates took it upon themselves to file for a race. No one came looking for them, they stepped up to the plate. That they tried to make sure that no seat went unchallenged. They're running 254 county wide races getting out and reconnecting with people. But no, you want the party to "anoint" candidates and just present you with a winning ticket. Oh let me see, I remember when we tried that. I think that was that 2000 Dream Ticket that Molly Beth put together. What a dream huh? :sarcasm:

By any chance did you sign a Kinky or Carol petition, did you?

13. don't assume.
Don't assume you think you know who you're talking to. I was probably in the same room as you just yesterday. I'm just a realist about the chances of most of our candidates.

14. A realist huh?
Is that's what you want to be called. Sounds like a comforting excuse. So that means you've already given up haven't you? None of our slate of candidates can possibly break 35%, so why bother. Well that was my whole point, exactly. If you're not going to try to win, you certainly aren't going to. So just because the odds are against you, you aren't impressed by the candidates. What courage you show.

Please don't let us unrealistic dreamers bore you with our "rah rah" fight them till hell freezes over spirit.

Sonia

15. I'd say you're a defeatist, not a realist
It's going to be a long, hard walk in a blizzard, uphill both ways to even get ONE of these candidates elected BUT what you saw at the convention this past weekend was years of hard work begun by the Deaniacs starting to bear fruit. Who would have expected LUBBOCK of all places to vote for Glenn Maxey? THAT was the work of the Deaniacs who got those folks energized & involved. If we lose some races this year? Well, we keep working hard for 2008. The only alternative is to roll over, play dead & let the Republicans continue to fuck our state & our country. That is NOT an acceptable alternative for me.

24. What a loser mentality you have.
It's understandable after all these years, but let me try to cheer you up.

David got 41% in 2004 -- three percentages points more than John Kerry -- in his Supreme Court race. Only JR Molina on the statewide ticket performed better. Quite a bit has happened to change the minds of the brainwashed in Texas since then, or hadn't you noticed?

Greg Abbott has 5 million bucks in the bank and is so scared he's already shaking down his supporters. David's got the strongest grassroots support of any candidate in the state. EVERY OTHER CANDIDATE IN THE STATE is asking for David's support. If you go to CanOFun you can see David's convention speech for yourself:

http://www.canofun.com/cof/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=16403

Cheer up, pal. We're going to work hard and the Repigs are going to keep screwing up and we're going to win some offices you never thought we could this year.

28. I disagree. IMO it's a very strong ticket!
And why? BECAUSE of speeches like this. Yes, Chet's speech was great, too... but Chet's speech isn't going to reach disaffected voters who've lost faith in the state party.

David's speaking style is the kind of "rah rah" talking that's going to win over those who have given up, believing that there's no hope. You may not like the "rah rah" approach, but you're already a strong, voting Dem (I assume). We need MORE... we need the ones who have STOPPED voting... THOSE are the people David's speeches are targeted to.

I hope that despite your seemingly pessimistic attitude, that you're prepared to stand up and FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT over the next few months. We need ALL the help we can get!

He always gives good speeches. He is one of the precious few who's not afraid to speak truth to power.
We need more candidates who are never afraid to speak truth to power.

I've never heard BAR give a speech and I was also impressed by her, as well as Hank Gilbert, and so many others that I can't recall at the moment!

Arrrgh, still haven't gotten enough rest to clear my head.

I already told you this, redqueen, but Melancon was my choice for Best New Candidate that I heard speak. This guy GETS IT, with message, oratory, framing and values. I saw him at the DFT workshop, and though he doesn't get red in the face and raise the roof, he very eloquently articulates why we're Democrats.
