I'm baaaack!
However, I am posting this from a Holiday Inn in Lyncburg, Va. Just brought Abby a/k/a/ Abigail a/k/a/ daughter Ashling to college at Sweetbriar near here.

Abby and I drove the KerryVan into Austin last Tuesday night. The Kerryvan, which has since been dismantled, consisted of a 16' UHaul trailer covered with Kerry Edwards Signs (10 on one side and 8 on the other) and other bumper stickers, pulled by a 98 Dodge Pickup loaded to the gills with stuff held down with a futon, etc. which aptly earned the name "Grapes of Wrath" (named by Abby -- just the greatest movie of all time.

We made note of responses and bumper stickers along the way. More on this later, but without a doubt, there were more Kerry Edwards stickers than along the entire route.

More later, ya'll.

1. (OOPS) More Kerry/Edwards stickers in Austin
than along th whole trip from Washington state, through Oregon, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico (just a corner) and North Texas combined.

We talked with a trucker in Green River Utah. He saw the Kerryvan at the gas pump at a truck stop and came looking for me. He asked if I had any more Kerry/Edwards signs. I didn't but gave him a BE PATRIOTIC - VOTE BUSH OUT and a REGIME CHANGE bumper stickers.

He said that truckers are talking all up and down the highways about how we need to get rid of Bush.

3. Road Trip (sort of long)
Edited on Sun Aug-22-04 11:41 PM by ashling
I. The Kerry van FINALLY gets underway
Abby and I finally left Tumwater about 1:30 AM on Friday. I had loaded the trailer as full as I could, boxes in the bed of the pickup with Abby's futon mattress covering, some 8x10 rugs and the wood futom frame tied on top of that. Abby's Papisan chair tied onto the open tailgate.

Space bags are great! We had them stuffed in anywhere the would go.

I commented to anybody that would listen, that it was my homage to the Grapes of Wrath - the finest movie of all time - at that George Bush's grapes of wrath are America's shame. Abby subsequently started calllin our rig "Grapes of Wrath," or "Grapes."

I had to stop about 30 miles down the road to buy some more rope because the futon frame was flying back. This fixed, we were on the road again . . .

We actually crossed paths with John Kerry. He was in Portland and then went to his place in Sun Valley Idaho for the weekend. Unfortunately, we didn't see him or even know how close we had come until the next evening.

II. Technical Difficulties
West Texas ain't got nothing on Eastern Oregon for barren and hot. It got up to 105. Fortunately we had air conditioning - in a manner of speaking. The Compressor was straining, and finally the bearings went.

At least that is what the mechanic in Boise , Idaho told us as he handed me the $800 bill. He had to get a new compressor because "there is not a rebuilt one west of the Rockies." I felt like I had been had, but what was I going to do?

The worst part of it was having to unhook the trailer. I hate having to do thet. Well, I guess it wasn't too bad, because I got to use their garage jack to lift it off of the hitch.

Abby and Patches and I waited in the waiting room until about 3:00 when they finally finished. Patches stole the scene as everybody had to pet her and scratch her behind the ears (which is her absolute favorite thing in the world.)

We finally got off down the road after I hitched the trailer back up - intent on travelling until we dropped. However, rain forced us to stop and try to tarp up - so I had to go into the WalMart in Jerome, Id. To make up for having to shop at what Abby calls "the store which shall not be named," I almost paged her as "Will the Union Organizer please come to the front," but I chickened out.

Well, this is getting longish, so I'll post further installments later.

To Be Continued ...

4. Road Trip II
III. More Difficulties

As I mentioned in the original post on this thread, the UHaul trailer was covered with Kerry/Edwards signs. So it was real hard to miss.

In the parking lot at the place in Jerome ID, a little old lady trucker appeared almost out of nowhere saying that she wanted to know where Kerry stood on truckers' issues. She began to explain to us that the Department of Transportation was illegal because they do not have to follow the constitution, yada yada yada.

Well, at least we had been noticed . . .

When we got in the truck again, I forgot to do something that I always do. I forgot to check the hitch.

We headed on down the road. About a mile down the road, the trailer started swaying really bad. I immediately slowed into the emergency lane as the trailer became unhitched and sparks started flying.

This is their biggest trailer, and so it has a hydraulic brake which engaged. No damage was done and nobody was hurt, but the trailer was sticking out into the highway a little. I used Abby's cell to call AAA and 911.

The Highway Patrol showed up first. This guy was extremely nice. Abby was thanking him and he said "We don't just give tickets, we help people too . . . but the firefighters get all the glory." So, be sure and say thank you to a Highway Patrol Officer today!

Anyway, he mentioned to Abby thathe thought it was a little unusual to see that trailer with all the Kerry signs in that part of Idaho. He said that the only part of Idaho that voted Democratic was Sun Valley near Kerry,s ranch. We told him that we thought someone may have messed with the hitch as we had not had any other problems with it. He seemed to think that it might be possible.

He also mentioned that he had just escorted Kerry though town (down that section of I-84) earlier that day. We were probably in Boise getting the air conditioning repaired.

When the tow truck guys showed up, the messed with the break on the trailer, but didn't know how to reset it. So we couldn't hook up again. They towed it to the nearest truck stop on their flatbed.

We talked with the UHaul people who told us to get a room for the night (for which we will supposedly be reimbursed). They were going to send somebody else in the morning to get it fixed.

Between standing on th side of the road for at least 2 hours, getting the air conditioning repaired, et al., our day was shot.

We went to several motels, but they were all full. We finally got one of the last rooms at a little motel right out of 1947. To put a positive spin on things, I told Abby that this was really more historical that staying in a room in which you could actually breathe. This was something out of Perry Mason. I expected Paul Drake to show up any minute. I think that the houskeeping staff had probably last been there sometime in the early 60s.

IV. American Indians for Kerry

It seems that there had been a really bad accident on the Interstate and this was the last place available. In addition, it seems that the whole area was booked heavily. The next morning as we were getting ready to go, I noticed that the Van next to us had a Kerry sticker. So I started talking to the owner. He had been stranded at this little piece of history as well.

He was the president of his Communication Workers local in California. We traded bumper stickers. We gave him a BE PATRIOTIC-VOTE BUSH OUT, a DEFOLIATE BUSH, & another bumper sticker. He gave Abby an AMERICAN INDIANS FOR KERRY sticker. They had just come from a big pow wow in Pocatello that was heavily Kerry/Edwards. They had also been to the North and South Dakota. They had met a lot of Harleys on the road (from Sturgis) who gave them thumbs up and other positive stuff.

We went back to the truckstop where another road service guy hooked us up with the help of three bikers.

We headed on down the road somewhat encouraged by our meetings that morning.

We checked the hitch every time we stopped.

to be continued . . .

You might X-post in the Idaho state forum. I'm sure they would appreciate it there too.

6. Road trip IV
IV. Decisions, Utah, and VietNam.

We headed on down toward Salt Lake City. Soon we had to make a decision: Utah, or Wyoming. We decided to head on downstate and either go across Colorado, or down through Moab, Ut and New Mexico.
We didn't have to make that decision for a while, so we just moved on down the road.

Every now and then we would see a bumper sticker that would make us smile or make us hiss, but for the most part, there were no stickers and no one gave any response to ours.

We stopped at every rest stop so I could catch a few winks. I drove and Abby was the cat wrangler.

Actually, patches did quite well on the trip. We had her litter box on the floor in the back. Unfortunately we left in at the Welcome area in Northern Utah, so we finally had to get another one.

We turned off of the Interstate at Spanish Fork and headed into the mountains, stopping at the first rest area. It was really nice with a stream etc. When we pulled up there were two cars and some folks getting ready for a hike into the hills. I figured that they were rock hunting, because one had a rock pick. Turns out they were on a paleontology trip from college in Wisconsin, looking for bird tracks.

One of their cars had a Kerry/Edwards sticker, so I started talking to the professor. He commented on our signs and asked if we had fire insurance. I told him about the events of the night before.

We wnt down by the creek and when we came back, the parking lot was full of scrambled paleontologist college students. We talked with them some. Onesaw Patches and had to come over and get her "Critter Fix" Patches was adored by all.:)

While all of this was going on, a guy came up and handed me a couple of folded pieces of paper. He said that he was with Kerry in Vietnam and thought I would be interested. I "thanked" him but before I could comment, he was scampering off to his truck and was gone. He obviously learned the art of tactical retreat in the military.

Just a bunch of drivel about how "we did not commit any atrocities ... yada yada yada.

We headed out . . . after I checked the hitch.

to be continued . . .
