Clear the calendar: Prez race headed to Texas

Austin-American Statesman

>>>>On the national scene after Tuesday’s balloting in 20-plus states, the results are still being sorted. Key questions include: Will Mitt Romney stay in? Does Mike Huckabee have a reasonable shot at winning more states? And will either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama banana-peel stumble any time soon?

In Texas, the answers to all questions boil down to a simply yee-haw. That’s because for the first time in decades, the state’s presidential primaries figure to be significant to the national nominating contests.

An early spin of the day came from Rep. Mark Strama, D-Austin, and a leader of Obama’s Texas team. Strama, mindful Obama won more states Tuesday even if Clinton won most big states, e-mails: “Tie goes to the underdog. Obama has closed an extraordinary gap in the last two weeks, and Texas is now positioned to put him over the top on March 4,” the date of the primaries.>>>>

>>>>Of the Democrats, Jillson said, “Clinton is narrowly ahead but will give up ground this coming weekend and next Tuesday in Maryland, Virginia and DC. Clinton is well positioned in both Texas and Ohio on March 4 and will look for solid wins in both to re-establish her front-runner status.”>>>>>
