Colleges line up against allowing guns on campuses
Colleges line up against allowing guns on campuses

AUSTIN — Texas universities are firing back against a bill that would permit students to carry handguns on campus.

Rep. Joe Driver, R-Garland, said his bill would be limited to students 21 and older. But campus police chiefs and administrators say the idea of permitting firepower on campus is a potential threat to student safety.

"As one faculty person told me, 'Do you think I want to pass out those F’s and D’s with somebody in the classroom having a gun?’ " said Rep. Lon Burnam, D-Fort Worth.

Burnam is a member of the House Public Safety Committee, which will consider the legislation at a hearing Monday.

Another North Texan on the committee, Rep. Phil King, R-Weatherford, said he believes that students should be able to leave guns in their vehicles on campus parking lots. But he said he is keeping an open mind about whether they should be permitted to carry guns elsewhere on campus.

1. Crazy policy think tank - the Texas Legislature
AAS 3/30/09
Bills would allow guns at college

It's the kind of scenario he's imagined since April 2007, when he was a student at Virginia Tech University and his girlfriend and several other people he knew were gunned down in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. There were times when Woods thought to himself that maybe he should get a gun.

University of Texas graduate student John Woods, a former Virginia Tech student, is fighting Texas bills allowing licensed concealed gun carriers to take their weapons to school.

"Then I learned pretty fast that wouldn't solve anything," said Woods, who is now a graduate student at UT. "The idea that somebody could stop a school shooting with a gun is impossible. It's reactive, not preventative."
(snip)

Of the 150 House members, 70 have signed on in support of Driver's bill. In the Senate, 12 of 31 senators signed on in support of Wentworth's bill.

2. The "Bubba" Mentality....
Edited on Tue Mar-31-09 11:50 PM by Baby Snooks
It is impossible to rationally argue a point with a bubba and Representative Driver is a bubba.

What happened at Virginia Tech was the result of a university not taking a stalking seriously. Actually there were two stalkings. It disturbed me that it was turned into a "gun control" issue. And this disturbs me even more. But the bubbas didn't pay attention to a student who was on campus that day at Virginia Tech so why would they pay attention to anyone else?

As everyone knows I am completely politically incorrect and the politically incorrect reality is that there are some who believe we will have a race war and, well, they want their sons and daughters to be well-armed when it happens so they can protect their own on our campuses. Gotta preserve the white race you know. Although it may annihilate itself long before anyone else gets a chance to. The problem is it will annihilate everyone else as well.

I hope this bill does not pass but if if does you can expect a number of "drunken rage" incidents. At which point the bubbas won't get the message but everyone else will.

Although everyone else should have gotten the message when Borris Miles decided to play "gangster thug" and the message is that guns and alcohol really don't mix well.

3. I hear ya
I think Burnam said it best. "How do you think professors are going to feel handing out failing grades to students knowing their armed?"

It won't take much to start an "incident". There is always fuel in that fire. All that's missing is the opportunity, which the Texas Legislature is determined to provide.

5. CHL license holders can carry pretty much everywhere and its not happening...
people who legally can carry guns almost everywhere else are not having "drunken rage" incidents.

Its already illegal to carry while intoxicated.

4. I let my representative know that I support concealed carry on campus...
and I thanked him for being one of the authors of the bill that will hopefully be passed and allow it.

If this bill passes the people who will be legally able to carry on campus are people who are already legally carrying almost everywhere else. Its idiotic to think that just because they would be carrying in school rooms that all of a sudden bad things will happen. Concealed carry license holders, myself included, dont commit evil acts with our handguns elsewhere so why do people worry about us doing so if we can in school.
