Half his donations came from appointees


AUSTIN (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry has accepted nearly $5 million in political campaign donations from people he has appointed to state boards and commissions since taking office in 2000.

That's according to a Houston Chronicle review of campaign finance records. The newspaper reports that nearly half the donations came from appointees who serve as higher education regents, including more than $840,000 from those at the University of Texas System.

In some cases, Perry's appointees gave money in the weeks before or after being selected.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner says appointees are subject to applications, background checks and legislative confirmations whether they give donations. Miner also noted that many people serving the state for Perry are not donors.
