Perry vetoes CPS Nazi bill!
Thanks to those of you who called or emailed the governor & your senator & representatives. SB 1440, which would have given CPS free reign to break into people's houses & snatch their kids for no reason, was vetoed yesterday by the Governor. What pisses me off is that it was DEMOCRATS who did this--wrote a bill that would not pass constitutional muster & then snuck it into an already-approved, uncontroversial bill because theirs wouldn't stand on its own (or stand up to very much scrutiny either). So piss on you, Watson & Rose! Piss on you other Democrats who just stood on the sidelines & were willing & able to give Nazi powers to an already out-of-control, rogue agency.

From grits for breakfast: Bad CPS bill goes down
SB 1440 by Watson/Madden is the bill discussed here and here that would have expanded CPS authority to seize kids for questioning without first notifying their parents or showing "good cause." (UPDATE: More from the Lone Star Times, which notes that "Perry had received 17,373 calls and letters against the measure and 455 supporting it.") However, those who fought the bill have some work to do in the interim to influence how similar legislation may look next session. In his veto statement, Perry concluded:

I am directing DFPS, through its parental advisory committee, to study the effect of the Gates decision on the ability of the department to appropriately enter a residence and, if necessary for the protection of the child, to transport the child for interviews in a neutral location. I am also directing DFPS, through its parental advisory committee, to develop and recommend statewide procedures to follow when seeking court orders to aid investigations, while protecting the rights of parents and families.

1. Well that's one good veto but the rest?
He killed 35 bills in total. A very good voter registration correction bill HB1457 by Scott Hochberg went down the tubes. :grr:

That ass-hole even vetoed no-brainier legislation like the TV recycling bill:

HB 821 by Leibowitz Sponsor: Watson
Relating to the sale, recovery, and recycling of certain television equipment; providing administrative penalties.

And the mean spirited ones like this:

HB 130 by Patrick Sponsor: Zaffirini
Relating to an enhanced quality full-day prekindergarten program provided by public school districts in conjunction with community providers.

HB 3148 by Smith, Todd Sponsor: West
Relating to exempting certain young persons who are convicted of an offense involving consensual sex from the requirement of registering as a sex offender in this state.

HB 3481 by Veasey Sponsor: Harris
Relating to the expunction of records and files relating to a person's arrest.

HB 3983 by Rodriguez Sponsor: Watson
Relating to the imposition of property taxes on the residential homesteads of low-income and moderate-income persons.

SB 223 by West Sponsor: Thompson
Relating to allowing a person who successfully completes a term of deferred adjudication community supervision to be eligible for a pardon.

Miserable excuse for a human being! MoFo idiot! :grr::grr::grr::grr:

5. yup
Although I agree more on some and less on others, on the list you posted. Cynically, vetoing the DPS bill may be to keep fundies happy, as the list you posted could all be viewed that way I think.

Perry axes money for volunteer tax centers

A bill intended to help working families with their federal income taxes fell victim to Gov. Rick Perry’s veto pen on Friday.

House Bill 2888 used about $2.6 million in federal money from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to support volunteer tax centers around the state that help low-income people fill out their federal income tax forms. Texans leave unclaimed an estimated $1 billion in refunds and tax credits, such as child care credits and the Earned Income tax credit.

Perry wrote in his veto statement that "taking the (federal dollars) away from their intended purpose of serving clients to fund this program is unnecessary. These funds should be used to benefit people, not create more government bureaucracy."

HB955, something about loosening regulations on financial institutions. Don't know the method to the madness, but maybe it was an attempted endrun to sneak something through?

2. More on the Perry bill massacre of 2009

Perry vetoes pre-K expansion, college health change
List of vetoes is one of the shortest since governor took office.

By Jason Embry
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Saturday, June 20, 2009

Gov. Rick Perry vetoed 37 pieces of legislation Friday, including measures to hold pre-kindergarten programs to new standards, change the way students pay for health care at colleges and allow the City of Austin to restrict home prices near commuter rail stations.

Perry also signed a $182 billion, two-year state budget, while at the same time erasing $289 million in spending approved by the Legislature. But almost all of that money was eliminated because it was contingent on bills that the Legislature ultimately did not pass.

The pre-kindergarten measure that Perry vetoed would have put in place new quality standards for pre-kindergarten classes, including teacher training and class-size limits. The classes serve children who are homeless or in foster care, have a parent in the military, have limited English-speaking skills or whose families are low-income.

hey dg there is quite a bit in the article about HB 1440.

4. Aw it's the typical whining
"We don't have enough clarity." Bullshit, yes they do; they're just too lazy &/or power-mad to actually follow their own policies, the laws, and the Constitutions.
