Lowering the Bar:
The Role of the Media in the 2004 Presidential Election

Austin, Texas, November 19, 2004 – The Texas Observer, the Open Society Institute, the MFI Foundation, and the LBJ School of Public Affairs today announced a star-studded Symposium on “National Politics and the Media” to run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, December 4 at Austin’s State Theater, 719 Congress Avenue.
Featuring highly esteemed and provocative figures in journalism and filmmaking, the Symposium will debate the role news and entertainment media played in the recent presidential election. The event is open to the public as part of the Texas Observer’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.
What happened in the 2004 presidential election? What did we learn from it? What does it tell us about the freedom of the press in the United States in the 21st Century?

10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., State Theater, 719 Congress Avenue



One month after the Presidential election, the Texas Observer and the Open Society Institute, with additional support from the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the MFI Foundation, will convene three panels of highly distinguished people with diverse backgrounds in the fields of media and politics. Panelists will be invited to debate the role news and entertainment media played in the recent presidential election. The event is open to the public; tickets are $10 at the door. The schedule follows:



1. What Happened?-The Press and the Practice of Presidential Politics in 2004

Premiere of documentary film by Paul Stekler, introduction by Texas Monthly editor Evan Smith

1. Me, me, me
I love the Observer. I can't do all of it however because my niece is graduating on Saturday as well and the whole family is in town.

Their collection of stories "50 Years of The Texas Observer" is a great little book too. They have been in the thick of things for half a century and still continue to do great stories.

I salute the Texas Observer for 50 years of muckraking in Texas. Yeee Haaaw!!!
