Kinky Friedman for Gov. of State of Texas
Lets draft Kinky as the Democratic candidate. It would at least make the race interesting.

Here is an fun intereview with Kinky in the Houston paper. See http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/headline/entertainment/2934366
__________
Q: What can we expect from you as governor?

A: I want to legalize gambling to pay for education.I also want to have the umbrella organization, the Texas Peace Corps. I've talked to Laura Bush, Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie about it. It will help with education in the state; the schools have been stripped of any kind of music and arts. And it'll also do things like Habitat for Humanity. It'll be above politics, it doesn't go through Texas legislature. And it'll be run by young people.
...

Q: Do you think you can change much as governor?

A: It doesn't matter what a governor thinks about abortion or Iraq. But the governor can inspire. That's what Rick Perry has failed to do. I want to stop the wussification of Texas. You can't legislate against Texas looking like Cleveland or every other place, but you can make your thoughts known.

Q: Your last foray into an election didn't go so well.

A: No, I ran unsuccessfully for justice of the peace, but I'm not going to hold the wonderful people of Kerrville responsible for the horrible mistake they made 18 years ago.

Q: So legalizing gambling, dewussification, any other plans?

A: No lesbian left behind. I'm all for gay marriage. They have every right to be as miserable as the rest of us. But really, a return to the glory of Texas is the issue. The cowboy spirit. I aspire to inspire before I expire.

1. Oh, he's already said he's going to run.
He's going to file as an independent in January.

If he appears to have a good shot at winning, I think I might really get behind him. It'd make things entertaining at least. :D

4. My son's Kinky Friedman story
My law partner got my son an autographed copy of one of Kinky's books after he told Kinky this story.

Back in 2001 my son was at the National Boy Scout Jamboree outside Washington D.C. James spent a great deal of time during the Jamboree at the National Jewish Committee on Scouting site. One day while leaving the NJCOS site, James was confronted by some a group of boys from one of the Utah troops who asked James if he was a Jew. One of the boys started jabbing James and calling him a "kike" and other nasty names. James tried to walk away and when that did not work, James hit the lead boy in the solar plexus. The other boys back away and James walked away humming the song "They Don't make Jews Like Jesus Any More."

Kinky was very impressed with this story and wrote a nice note to James about his incident.

It may be a wasted vote but given that I doubt that a Democrat is going to win Texas for a while, I may support Kinky because it will be fun.

8. In February, at the Alamo, on Imus
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 08:54 AM by PDittie
Texas musician and author Kinky Friedman plans to formally launch his candidacy for Texas governor on live television in February, he announced Wednesday.

Friedman said he expects to appear outside the Alamo on MSNBC's "Imus in the Morning" on Feb. 3 or 4. He plans to be joined by the band "Asleep at the Wheel" and a group of child fiddlers.

Friedman told the San Antonio Express-News in Wednesday's online edition that he chose the program because Imus is an old friend and "a lot of geezers watch his show in Texas."

"This could be a very long shot," Friedman said of his anticipated gubernatorial run, which he has touted for more than a year.

9. What happens in a 3 way race?
Let's say Kay wins the repuke primary, Kinky runs as an Independent and we find a great Democrat candidate to run for Governor now. Who does Kinky take votes away from?

I certainly think Kinky is entertaining and he always has the possibility of pulling off a win like Ventura did in MN, but he won't be the Democratic Party nominee for Governor. The Dems will have another candidate so then it becomes a 3 horse race.

If it was a two horse race between Kay and Kinky I would back Kinky but I think we need a Democratic candidate for Governor. We can't sit out a race.

10. Chris Bell will be our nominee
and he will lose as many votes to Kinky as Kay will.

That may be a little; that may be a lot.

11. Yep. Just what we need. Another joke.
Let's get serious folks. They will put him on every radio show just to say how low the Dems are.
