Fundies registered young voters at "Lifest" in Wisconsin
For group, Lifest a voter quest
‘Americans of Faith’ pitch ‘Operation:Vote’ at festival

Oshkosh’s nationally-renowned Christian music event wrapped up Sunday to what were estimated to be record-setting crowds of 16,000 to 18,000 spectators each day its four-day run, event marketing director Brian Schalk said.

The barrage of thumping Christian rock was also the backdrop to the efforts of “Operation: Vote,” the conservative Americans of Faith’s push to get 5 million voters signed up in time for the presidential election.

“We’re very much okay with people voicing their opinions and what they feel we need to do in this time,” Schalk said.

Stephen Replogle, 24, one of Operation: Vote’s field coordinators, said the effort has no motives other than to get voters signed up – particularly the young target demographic at events like Lifest.

What can I say? Perhaps this is why Wisconsin is turning into a Red state.

3. This is just what our dictator wants - complete merger of church
and state. Before you know it they will be doing the same at Mass on Sunday - along with a guide on just who to vote for in every race. Nothing will shock me anymore.

4. I'm doing the opposite here in Texas!!
I'm calling it Fudge-Fest. (Not really-- it just sounded good...)

Anyone who knows any noncommittal young folks in Texas-- send em to me! I'm having pro-choice parties to educate young girls on the rights that are being stripped away from them.

We have to fight these idiots with everything we have. And that includes educating young people. I find myself talking to complete strangers anywhere I am. Most of them are very surprised.

If anyone wants to do the same, and wants to know what I'm doing, PM me for details. These kids talk to each other. We have to depend on them to spread the word within their own groups.

5. About Lifest
Sure it's a Christian rock thing but we would have been fair game there too. Bill Schwulst who works all over for political operations actually suggested that we set up a Kerry table at Lifest to counter the fundies... the Kerry staffer in the area balked, as did I.

Not because I didn't think we could be a nice site for the Christian rock fans that weren't right wing psychos, but because two of us at a table would have probably had a not so fun time dealing with the high percentage of right wing psychos that did attend.

Unfortunately that's the problem with dealing with religious groups these days. The fundies have brainwashed so many of them that the truth distortion makes it dangerous for us to even approach them.

We'll have to make an impact in another way.

Oh and P.O.D. actually played this festival a few years back. Unreal...

This is something that I proposed to the coordinated campaign. Let's get a booth and some liberal leaning priests and preach Democratic values of charity and helping those less fortunate.

Everyone ran in fear.

If we want a path toward winning we must acknowledge that an overwhelming majority of American's believe in a higher power. The other side is the only political viewpoint thousands-and-thousands of kids are hearing at the afore mentioned festival.

We have to stop showing up only during elections and become ingrained in the community. And in Wisconsin there is a saying that there is a "bar and a church on every corner". I think we got the bars covered... let's start planning a resurgence of the religious left.

(FYI-Life-fest is in Oshkosh where the State convention is).

14. Everyone ran in fear?
I'm not surprised - you were talking to the uncoordinated campaign - that's the wrong place to go if you want something done right.

What you're speaking of would have to be organized locally through a local or regional Dem party or progressive group/church. It can be done and I think it's a fine idea. But this Dem couldn't bring herself to even drive past one of these hellfire shin-digs, let alone spend hours on a beautiful day trying to persuade the brainwashed to be more xtian-like.

Battling the campaign from the pulpit is more than uphill - it's an abrupt cliff that only the most skilled should navigate. That most certainly does not include members of the uncoordinated campaign.

Moved here to work on a Democratic Lt. Governor primary. Before that I lived in Oshkosh for about 8 years.

15. secretdj's a good guy...
He's Bill Schwulst who was a big time activist in the area and eventually became an official Kerry Staffer out of the Green Bay office. As he said he's working on a campaign in VA but he was based out of Oshkosh for a long time and was just recently the Vice-Chair of the Winnebago County Democratic Party.

You can take the tinfoil hat off now...

I was there when we discussed Lifest as an option and yeah it was pretty much shot down with loads of skepticism. I too, admit having reservations about the idea. Not that there aren't plenty of church going Democrats but because Lifest seems to cater to the christian pro-life community. It would be hard to make inroads in my opinion. But if there's Dems out there brave enough to give it a go, who knows what kind of dent we could make.

17. It's cool
Bill was pretty good friends with many of the Greens in the area as well so he's easy to talk to even if you're not 100% Dem. :)
