2. Wonder if it will ever happen |
|
If it does, it will happen on the AM dial.
If I were to bet, I'd put my money on WAUK (1510), a daytime-only sports station. So far, they're holding their own against WSSP (1250), but for how long? I also wouldn't discount WMCS (1290). They are currently in some ridiculous agreement with WAUK to air ESPN programming off satellite from the time WAUK signs off to sign-on the next morning. Meaning that they actually dumped their long-time classic R&B programming (which I thought would never happen). During the daytime hours, it's black-oriented talk. Ratings have taken a dive. This shared format is a ridiculous idea, and will likely not work. But WAUK hasn't tanked in the ratings yet, and may or may not. We shall see.
Forget WTMJ and WISN. Their ratings are too good.
Same with WOKY.
WSSP has too much invested in their sports format.
WJYI (1340) seems to be doing well with brokered (mostly religious) programming.
Radio Disney is staying put at 1640. ABC/Disney owns the station, and they have shown virtually no interest in liberal talk.
Ditto for the Salem stations.
WNOV is and will remain a black-oriented community station.
There is a rumor about a construction permit in Sussex for 1370, but don't hold your breath.
Incidentally, there is a major format change going on in Milwaukee as I type this. Lazer 103 has finally bitten the dust, and it's likely the new station (102.9 The Hog) will take on The Brew with a similar, albeit harder classic rock format when it signs on tomorrow (Tuesday). All the jocks were axed except for Bob and Brian. And no, they are not going AAR. Even I think that would be a stupid idea.
If you want liberal talk, best bet is WRJN (1400) out of Racine. They have Ed Schultz and Alan Colmes (I know, I know).
Best bet? Again, my money's on WAUK or WMCS currently. But it's not likely happening anytime soon.

There isn't really anything with as strong a reach in Wisconsin.
Too many high-powered stations in Chicago, I guess.
BTW: That new "Hog" station that I referred to earlier in this thread sounds pretty good. It's alot like Lazer, but without the angry skaterat music. Lots more 70's and 80's rock. Way better than The Brew.

7. Well, I do get WTMJ up here. |
|
Many AM stations have stronger signals, and carry far along the lake. On cloudy days, I regularly get signals from across the lake, not just the U.P.

...there aren't many stations in SE Wisconsin with the reach of WTMJ.
I have picked up FM stations from western Michigan, particularly Grand Rapids. Sometimes an AM station might creep across, but AM waves are kinda funny.

All the stations I referred to come in strong throughout Milwaukee.
Though, as I mentioned, WAUK goes off the air at sunset.
Signal strength-wise, WNOV is the weakest station in Milwaukee proper. Sounds terrible, and I'm not even talking about the programming.

4. Ever? Yes. The question is how long it takes... |
|
...the cro-magnons of Milwaukee radio to figure out they stand to make some real coin on the format.

11. That was WISN's little "American Idol"-knockoff contest |
|
And the wingnut bloggers are accusing Daily Kos of trying to fix the contest and allegedly trying to push votes in her favor. The way I see it is Clear Channel obviously knew something like this could happen and did nothing to stop it. Is it really that serious?
Besides, conservative blogs have tried to pull similar shit in the past.
As I hear it, she will be just a voice in a sea of other talking heads on the morning show (if she ever makes it there). Otherwise, she's just collecting a paycheck if they opt not to put her on the air.
I really could care less. I wouldn't be caught dead listening to that piece of shit station. WISN sucks.
