A somewhat junior state rep. from central Wisconsin finally takes on these idiots. Go Amy Sue.

Rep. Vruwink Blasts Attack on Marine’s End of Life Decision

Milladore –Rep. Amy Sue Vruwink (D-Milladore) expressed shock and concern in response to a recent news release from Pro-Life Wisconsin that calls the wife of a fallen Wisconsin Marine, and the hospice workers that cared for him, murderers for carrying out the marine’s living will directives.

“Pro-Life Wisconsin has gone too far with their rhetoric,” said Rep. Vruwink. “Official living will directives are a serious, private matter for many people. Formulating and following through with these directives is not murder. To suggest otherwise is misleading and shockingly disrespectful to those dealing with a tragic loss.”

The Pro-Life Wisconsin release distorted the facts regarding the final moments of a marine who suffered a severe brain injury while serving in Iraq and fell unconscious. After the patient’s doctors concluded the marine would never regain consciousness, his wife asked that the doctors carry out his expressed wishes outlined in his “living will document.” He had explicitly requested that he be taken off of support systems if he were ever in a perpetual coma.

Rep. Vruwink is the author of a bill that would increase access to living wills by allowing people to indicate on their driver’s licenses that they have a living will. These documents have received increased national attention after the Terry Schiavo case earlier this spring.

Living wills are relatively standard, and for years they have been used to help remove ambiguity and reduce pressure on families that must deal with an incapacitated loved one’s medical decisions. A patient can make clear whether they wish to be kept alive at all costs or if they do not wish to be hooked up to tubes for the rest of their comatose lives.

“This unfortunate incident is exactly what living wills are for. Because this individual had a living will there was no doubt that the actions taken were what he wanted,” said Rep. Vruwink. “A living will is a personal choice that every person has a right to exercise. There is a growing movement by some to have government overreach into people’s personal and private lives and I find this trend terribly disturbing.”
