Three 101st soldiers killed by roadside bomb

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Three members of the 101st Airborne Division died of injuries they suffered from a roadside bomb that detonated in Latifiyah, Iraq, the Army said Friday. The three soldiers, all infantrymen assigned to the 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, died Wednesday in Baghdad, the Army said. They were riding in a Humvee when the bomb exploded. Four other members of the Fort Campbell-based 101st died in a roadside bombing south of Baghdad on Monday.

Wednesday's bombing killed Spc. Joshua J. Munger, 22, of Maysville, Mo.; Spc. Benjamin A. Smith, 21, of Hudson, Wis.; and Pfc. Tyler R. Mackenzie, 20, of Evans, Colo. The Army said Friday that memorial services for the soldiers will be held in Iraq.

With the latest casualties, 76 soldiers based at Fort Campbell have died in the Iraq war, according to Kelly Tyler, a public affairs officer at Fort Campbell. Munger entered the Army in 2002, Smith joined in 2003 and Mackenzie entered in January. Smith and Mackenzie were not married. Munger is survived by his wife, Alysha, and an 11-month-old son, Colton.

http://www.duluthsuperior.com/mld/duluthsuperior/13205732.htm

SPARTA, Wis. - A 19-year-old soldier from Sparta has died in Iraq, where three of his brothers also have served.

David Gaunky of Sparta said the family was informed Friday his son, Alex, died from injuries suffered when a vehicle came across the road and crashed into his convoy. He said authorities were still investigating why the other vehicle swerved.

He said his son suffered severe head trauma and other injuries, requiring multiple surgeries, and was airlifted to Germany but died.

His son, who was with the Army's 101st Airborne Division, was sent to Iraq in August, he said.

One of 10 Marines killed in Iraq from Tomah
Associated Press

MILWAUKEE - A sergeant from Wisconsin was one of 10 Marines killed by an improvised explosive device on Thursday, authorities said. Sgt. Andy A. Stevens, 29, of Tomah, was killed in Fallujah, the Department of Defense said in a statement Saturday. The attack, which injured 11 others, was the deadliest against American troops in four months. The department said all 10 Marines were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

"Words will never describe accurately the honor, courage and commitment of these fallen Marines and Sailors," said 7th Marine Regiment Col. William Crowe in a statement. "These men did not give their lives in vain, and we will not soon forget our fellow brothers."
Stevens, who joined the Marines in June 1995 and was serving as a scout sniper, deployed to Iraq with his unit in July, the Marine Corps said.

A woman who identified herself as Stevens' sister in Tomah said the family was not prepared to speak to the media. "The family is in mourning and they wish not to be disturbed right now," said 1st Sgt. Christopher Campbell of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Center in Madison. Staff were to interview the family Saturday afternoon and then issue a press release, he said.

Stevens' father, Allen, lives in Tomah and his mother, Kaye Olson, lives in Maryland Heights, Mo., the corps said. The U.S. military said Friday that the group was on a foot patrol near Fallujah. Of the 11 Marines who were injured, seven later returned to duty, it said.
