Sauerkraut to ward off avian flu? It's possible
By Karen Herzog
MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL

MILWAUKEE - While President Bush scrambles to ward off an avian flu pandemic, Wisconsin is sitting atop a bumper crop of one possible preventive: sauerkraut.
An international buzz developed after scientists at Seoul National University in South Korea fed an extract of kimchi, a spicy Korean variant of sauerkraut, to 13 chickens infected with avian flu, and a week later, 11 of the birds started to recover, according to a report by the BBC Network.

5. I used to work with an old lady from Lithuania. She always said to eat
sauerkraut. "It gives you good gas...you'll never get sick!" Bless her heart.

6. How do they know it wasn't the chili in the cabbage?
Does that mean I have to add Frank's to my sauerkraut? Or can I just mix it into my buffalo wings?

Sauerkraut sales soar

A report about avian flu circulating around the globe has sauerkraut sales soaring.

The report, originating out of the BBC in the United Kingdom, said scientists at Seoul National University fed an extract of kimchi, a spicy Korean variant of sauerkraut, to 13 chickens infected with avian flu. A week after the birds were fed the sauerkraut, 11 of the birds started to recover, according to the report.

"The minute I heard the story about the chickens, I knew what was going to happen at our store, "said Ted Guell, who does the ordering for the Fond du Lac Piggly Wiggly store, 131 University Drive.

Guell said there's been a 20 percent increase in sales, at minimum, of the fermented, saucy kraut since national news touted its supposed benefits. Though not the Asian variety, it's still close enough for local people to believe that even if it doesn't help, it can't hurt.

Guell said he will make sure Piggly Wiggly stays stocked with the fermented cabbage, all kinds of brands, in cans of all sizes, along with refrigerated bags.
