State gets F on reproductive rights
Waiting period, ban on public funds cited

A 2005 state-by-state review by NARAL Pro-Choice America will give Wisconsin an F grade for reproductive rights. It is the same grade as the one awarded Mississippi, which has the most restrictive laws in the nation.

<snip>

But it also received negative points for legislative attacks on the state's Medicaid family planning program and near-passage of a broadened "conscience clause" for medical professionals, Roys said.

<snip>

Roys said she was not optimistic about what the new Wisconsin Legislature would do, but NARAL still planned to push for several changes in state law. One NARAL proposal would require that rape victims be told about the option of emergency contraception when they come into an emergency room after an attack.

Additionally, NARAL would like every baby born to be a healthy baby. "The black infant mortality rate is much higher, and American Indians' rate is almost twice as high as white infants. We want to assure that prenatal care is available to all women, regardless of economic status," Roys said.

<snip>

This is just one more way in which we are losing our "Progressive" image in this state. Somehow we have got to turn our state legislatures over.

1. Reframe the issue
as a social services issue. Increased social services means less panic and a feeling that society will take care of the child after the mother gives birth (if she decides to keep it or not).

Bring in "personal responsibility", in that increased social services helps her help herself. She cannot pick herself up by her bootstaps by herself with the child but with help she can.

Just a few ideas. The GOP has used our catch phrases against us for years, turn the tables on them. They have abandoned many of their catch phrases with their recent actions the last few years.
