Hey Wisconsiners...a Fudge Striped visit could be happenin this spring... |
|
I'll probably be heading up north for a genealogy research trip (to Madison, chicago, and Minneapolis) around May or June.
Who wants to hang out? In Mad City, I'll be staying at the Canterbury (I hope) @ State and gorham. I ADORE that place.
And in Chicago I'll be out by O'Hare.
Anybody wanna hang out? FSC

I'll keep ya informed. Mostly via here.
I'm looking at the first part of June right now. I'd hoped for May, but all the rates near UW go up around grad weekend. And The Canterbury is expensive enough as it is!

Let me know when and I'll try to be there.
I'm only an hour and a half out of Madison.

Gotta meet eyesroll.
It'll be so nice to be in three blue areas for 2 weeks! I got spoiled when I came up just for a few days in December.

I oughta be able to get around great now!
I'm practically a Chicago-native now-- after fighting my way through miles and miles of Santa-costumed motorcycle-enthusiasts!
Or you can pick your favorite location this time. You have two to choose from... FSC

That's VERY sweet ClassWarrior! (I think...)
And there will be less of me visiting too. I'm waiting for the Chicago folks to do a double take from the little pudgeball they saw when I was up in December.
Hope you can make it! FSC

7. Need a guide for your genealogical tour? |
|
I'm a former Madisonian with 16 years experience at genealogical research in Madison. Even with that much experience I have to admit I don't know all there is to know but I know where to go to find answers. Kinda sounds like you've been there before, though.
Anyway, I could use a research trip to Madison myself. The only problem is that my oldest is graduating highschool the third weekend in May so it would probably have to be after that for me.

8. It's beginning to sound like early June... |
|
so possibly.
I pretty much know what I'm looking for. Mostly marriage certs, death certs, and obituaries. And any extra newspaper articles about family related stuff.
I'm on godfrey.org, and have found some wonderful stuff through it, but it figures....of all the papers in Wisconsin, they DON'T have Beloit online, and it's the one I desperately need.
The last time I was there I was still a newbie. I've grown some major genealogy cojones the last 2 years, so I'm kicking butt and taking names now. I've already managed to dig up three branches of this family that no one had heard from since the early part of the century, so I'm doing good.
My great grandfather had 9 brothers and sisters, and I now have contacts in about 7 of those branches. And if I can do that well with finding Smiths, everything else is chump change!
I'm looking at trying to plan a huge family reunion next year in Beloit, so I'm intent on finding as many branches as possible before then. It keeps me from dwelling so much on the fact that the world is completely fucked up....helps me live in another era for awhile or something.

I'm with you on that. I have most of my family traced back to Europe and haven't had the energy to tackle overseas genealogy yet. There are still some fragments that need cleaning up here and there but the addiction has kind of faded for me and I've turned to other hobbies the last couple of years like politics. At the moment I'm a bit burned out on that and, like you, need a diversion from the fact that the world is so fucked up. So I've gone back to writing for the time being. I get to do loads of historical research and spend a great deal of time in another era, too.
Congrats on your success at finding Smiths. :toast: You certainly don't need any help. But if you all arrange a meetup, I may join you too.

The Fudgy one will be in Madison from June 8th til June 15th, when I'll be heading onto Minneapolis. (I'm flying into Chicago on the 2nd and will be there for a few days before I get to Madison).
I'll probably be at the Historical Society for most of that time during the days, and I'll be taking side trips during the week to Clinton, Janesville, Beloit, and possibly Brodhead.
I can rustle up some time that Saturday night (11th) or on Sunday evening (12th) for hanging out. Saturday would be better, since I'm going to try to drive out to Clinton on Sunday to visit with a cousin. If weekday nights work better for any of you, let me know.
If ya'll can think of any decent pubs or spots near campus, that would be great, since I get highly confused driving in Madison. Too many one-way streets make me crazy.
So let's do it! FSC

Many of us will be in Oshkosh that Friday and Saturday including me. But I'm sure there will be a few who can make it to Mad City

Well, ya can't please everybody.
Trying to work around the schedules for three libraries in 3 states, and trying to avoid higher room rates and sold out spots in Mad during graduation was hard enough.
Looks like eyesroll and I will be doing a girls night out! You up for this, S?

I believe the 11th is a co-workers wedding, and I will be expected to attend (and thus, not going to the Dem convention).

I'll probably try to hit Clinton during the day since not much will be going on and the Historical Center will be closed.
Any place cool open on Sundays?

I am not too familiar with Sunday evening Madison nightlife, but I can easily find out. There's plenty of stuff open.

I might actually be able to go to the state Convention after all, and just cut out in time to go to the wedding (depending on whether it's an afternoon or evening wedding, anyhow). Duh.
