Harsdorf’s Reagan Highway Bill Goes to the Governor
(Madison) . . . Legislation authored by State Senator Sheila Harsdorf (R – River Falls) that would name the highway that runs through the childhood home of Ronald Reagan after the late 40th President passed the State Senate today, and is now available to be signed by Governor Doyle.

“Ronald Reagan undoubtedly set in motion a chain of events that hastened the demise of communism in the former Soviet Union and throughout Eastern Europe,” Harsdorf stated on the Senate floor. “Today, his legacy can be seen in the freedom and democracy that are maturing amongst the hundreds-of-millions individuals that have new opportunities in part due to the perseverance of a great leader.”

The bill would rename a portion of Wisconsin’s Highway 14 “Ronald Reagan Highway”. The highway extends into Wisconsin from Dixon, Illinois, Reagan’s birthplace. In Illinois, it has already been renamed after President Reagan. Private donations would pay for the minimal costs involved in officially renaming the highway.

“Following his death last June, an often controversial political leader was showered with broad public adoration,” continued Harsdorf. “His funeral proved to be one of the biggest spectacles for a passing
public official. Democrat and Republican dignitaries alike came to pay their respects to a man that has permanently etched the direction of the United States.”

The bill cleared the State Senate on a bipartisan 21-12 vote, after passing the State Assembly last month. Last session, before Reagan’s death, Governor Doyle vetoed similar legislation.

“Ronald Reagan undoubtedly set in motion a chain of events that hastened the demise of communism in the former Soviet Union and throughout Eastern Europe” Yeah, right. “Following his death last June, an often controversial political leader was showered with broad public adoration,” Little too much EMF polution there Shelia? Guess she's posturing for her Lt. Guber run.

I hope Doyle vetoes it again. What bull$#!t

1. Funny, I thought that 'perestroika', 'glasnost' and the initial funding
of the mujahadin in Afghanistan all took place under Carter.

Blue jeans, KFC, and rock music had more to do with the collapse of the soviet union than did Reagan's Star Wars -- because of the policies of rapproachment with the west and openness of the press, the soviet populace figured out that they were in Afghanistan for no good reason, and it was costing them status in the world. They came to want that respect, along with western consumer goods, and that pulled down the soviet system.

Carter, not Reagan.

3. Hwy 14 goes nowhere near Dixon
Harsdorf's map reading skills are as poor as her reading of history.
I drive this road every day, so I sure hope this is vetoed.

5. Let her have it...give us a Clinton Superhighway! eom
I dispise Reagan, but he was a President. And stuff gets named after Presidents. But life is a two-way street. How about a Clinton highway? I-94 between the blue cities of Madison and Milwaukee?
