7. make this a roll call thread?

People occasionally wonder who the Canadians are here and how many we are, and one never remembers them all, especially as numbers grow. Now we could just refer 'em here for a list.

Me!

I've never felt otherwise, in all my trips to Canada. Of course, we try not to be obnoxious anywhere we go, so I imagine that helps.

Mr. Nownow and I would like to do a cross-country trip up there, sometime -- neither of us has been out of Ontario -- but I don't know if we'll ever do it. We do want to go to Vacnouver one of these days, if I can ever talk myself into the plane flight.

Don't blame you for hating our gov't of the moment.

But in reality, I do remember reading and hearing about one of your female members of parliament ... can't recall her name, but if I remember correctly she said something like : "Those damn Americans! I hate them!"

Did she not? And everyone on your side of the border seemed to agree with her and even egged her on when she didn't take her remarks back.

Sorry to be taking this out on you Liberty, but it still rankles.

I even got into a fight with some friends from Canada over that one.

Call me foolish if you must, but even with all her problems, and indeed there are many ... I still love this country and resent it and our people being referred to as EVIL as the recent poll of Canadian teenagers showed in their responses!

Enough of this. I am getting more upset by the minute! Must calm down and get back to the rest of DU!

But in reality, I do remember reading and hearing about one of your female members of parliament ... can't recall her name, but if I remember correctly she said something like : "Those damn Americans! I hate them!"

If one is going to go to the trouble of remembering what someone said, one might remember what she said it ABOUT.

http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030227.wdamn0227/BNStory/National

"Damn Americans, I hate those bastards," Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish said while surrounded by reporters after a caucus meeting.

Ms. Parrish later said the harsh words do not reflect her view of the people of the United States, although she is extremely angry about President George W. Bush's threat to invade Iraq.

The controversial remarks followed a scrum in which she told journalists that something must be done to stop Mr. Bush, whom she called a bully.

"That man's ready to go, he doesn't care. He is gunning for a fight," said Ms. Parrish, who represents the Ontario riding of Mississauga Centre.
(Anything there we might disagree with?)

Nonetheless: WE didn't elect the bastard. And we didn't elect whoever it was who appointed the bastards who appointed the bastard.

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell whether a speaker who uses a term that designates a group of people by nationality is referring to the people, or their nation as represented by its elected (or whatever) leaders/representatives. "The Chinese vetoed the resolution at the UN" -- all of 'em did?

People interested in civil discourse don't forget what meaning of a word a speaker was applying, while making big hay out of what the speaker said. There's absolutely no reason to believe, or claim, that Parrish was referring to each and every one of the 285 million USAmericans, or to USAmericans in general, when she used the term "Americans" immediately after a meeting at which the subject was the American plan to commit an illegal aggression against another nation.

If Cheney said something similar about "Canadians" on exiting a meeting concerning a Canadian government policy he didn't like, I like to think I'd judge his remark by the context.

And then I'd probably laugh, because being called names by USAmerican politicians and public figures usually means we're doing something right and they're just confirming their assholishness and unwittingly paying a compliment.

I still love this country and resent it and our people being referred to as EVIL as the recent poll of Canadian teenagers showed in their responses!

You watch too much Fox, right?

Here's what said Canadian teenagers REALLY said:

http://www.canada.com/national/features/youthvote2004/story.html?id=26d1030a-8bb2-4e14-968d-b67774ac879b

In a telephone poll of 500 teens aged 14 to 18, more than 40 per cent of respondents saw the U.S. as an evil global force. Among French Canadians, that number jumped to 64 per cent. Ontario proved the most conflicted on the issue; there, nearly one-fifth of youth were on the fence.
That really just isn't QUITE the same as "our people being referred to as EVIL", IS IT??

Y'all come back now, y'here? Maybe we can exchange tales of rude tourists ...

63. Gosh, it's a good thing we Canadians didn't read this on 9/11...
seeing as we took in and cared for thousands of US citizens when their own country would not allow them in. Come to think of it, even if we had read your opinion, we still would have done whatever we could to help.

How quickly some forget that we, too, have soldiers serving in Afghanistan after the bush admin abandoned the Afghans after promising they would NOT.

45. All the Canadians I have ever met...
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 10:28 PM by fudge stripe cookays
(and that's a lot since all my in-laws, my husband, his best friends, and many acquaintances I've met while up there are all Canadian) have treated me with nothing but the nicest, warmest feelings whatsoever.

They're irritated by the loudmouthed blowhards, who always have to talk about how GREAT the USA is, and how much BETTER we are, and how PATRIOTIC we are.

I far prefer the Canadian way, of being proud and happy to be Canadian, but not having to wave it in everybody's face all the time, and scream it from the top of their lungs.

Canadians have a vested interest in what happens with our economy. There's the old comparison of someone sleeping next to an elephant. Whatever happens with us affects them, whether they want it to or not. Is it any wonder that they would want to participate in the discussion with those of who can change this election?

The Canadians have their own version of democracy, with the whole parliamentary portion, and prime minister, and having the queen as a figurehead and all, but why do you care? Are you that annoyed with their presence here on DU?

This question seemed really rude. Our Canadian DUers are some of my favorite people here. And you've been upset for awhile? You only have 16 freaking posts.

People hate our government. They don't hate us. As long as we don't behave like asses while we're there. That seems to be the problem, now doesn't it?

Is that bad?

I have been lurking for a long time and finally decided to do the right thing and join.

I have enjoyed my time in here so far. (up intil now, that is.) Am retired and don't really get much time to post in here, mainly just read.

Also am a two-fingered typist and it takes me forever.

Yes, only 16 "freaking posts" as you so politely put it, but I also have 62 "freaking years" of being an American, and come hell or high water ... Democrat or Republican administrations ... this is MY country, not theirs!

49. Well this is OUR board. ALL of us.
You're acting like a typical American tourist. No matter how much any of us love our country, we realize that there are some major problems with it right now. This is not the time for rah-rahs.

We're paying for what's going on in our reputation abroad, and on our own continent. Perhaps you need to grow a thicker skin.

The Canadians here have shown themselves to be fine members of this board, and this community. And most have been here much longer than you.

Since you're a little new at this, we'll cut you some slack, but if you've been lurking, you know that people with low post counts are often creeps from Free Republic who come here and stir up trouble.

If you want to avoid looking like one of them, I would suggest waiting until you're a little more well-known to everyone before getting your goat up so much.

61. Glad you've had your say.
Please remember, that you were the one who was initially upset here. (refer to your post #39).

You're just uncomfortable with the fact that someone did not like your sentiments and chose to call you on them. That is a very Republican tactic. They get their dander up over something, and then when someone actually has the balls to call them on it, they act like the person responding is the one with the problem, or act like they were "just joking."

My Canadian friends won't count for "diddley" on election day? :wtf:? I don't pick my friends on the basis of their nationality or whether they can "help" me with anything. I choose them because they're good people and I have something in common with them.

I have to say I'm relieved you won't be darkening the Canadian forum again. With an attitude like yours, I'm sure that thought will be welcomed by many of them.

The people I've met are warm and funny, and I'm always amused at seeing things from their perspective when I go up. They give me lots ot think about when I come back!

No matter where I go, I'm always amazed at the loudmouthed Americans making us look like idiots to the rest of the world. I try my damndest never to be like that....to learn some of the language and try to converse with the locals in it, to sample all types of food, meet some locals, and totally immerse myself in another culture.

Many Americans don't see anything beyond their neighborhood Wal-Mart, and it infuriates me!! Especially when they come on a Canadian thread and start bashing others.

I'm not saying her snowbirds are any better. My grandmother lived in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas for many years, and dealt with lots of them as well. Perhaps the Canadians feel justified in ragging on the locals since many Americans do the same when they're there?

We need to look at ourselves before we start making judgement calls on others. You'll probably see me on this board a lot! :-)

Anytime, L or D!

with the endless Bush antics and scandals.

This will provide a few "sanity breaks."

I already have "right-wing overload" from living in Alberta.

56. Hi FforA!
Which part of Alberta?

reprehensor and I get up every year or so, since his family is still there. We travel between Calgary and Edmonton a lot. His family is in Wabamun and Stony Plain, and we have tons of friends in Calgary.

=)

68. Hi FSC!
I'm in Edmonton. Don't seem to be too many DUers living here (that I know of anyway), but it's great to see so many Canadians on the board.

I get to Calgary occasionally, LOL.

Are you living in Alberta as well?

69. Unfortunately no.
reprehensor and I were an internet relationship, and at the time we got together, I had just gotten my job, and was not abote to uproot myself for anyone. I just had too negative a history with the opposite sex.

Fortunately, he was much more idealistic, and was willing to go anywhere to be with me. Pretty cool, eh?

Right now we're outside of Dallas (I'm an Austin girl originally). But if things get really bad (read: stolen election) we'll be heading up in a year or 2.

We get up to Edmonton area every year or so though. Maybe we can hook up! =)

Now we can look the "state" posters in the eye (metaphorically) and say, "..well, back in OUR forum...."
