2. I just caught a little of this guy Harper on the BBC
he is a neo-con type conservative? How in the hell did that happen in Canada? And please explain to me how he is out in a year. I am clueless about this.

Thanks Lynn!

3. well
we needed to send the libs back to the drawing board to get a real leader with a new vision for the party and country.

what we did was elect a minority con gov which is like having a rabid dog de-fanged and on a short leash held by lefties so that everyone will see the foam on the mouth without getting bitten.

5. What Roho said.
Sums it up very nicely.

The real rightwingnut neocon Harper will emerge -yet be harmless- and Canadians will again assure themselves that remaining true to the Canadian values of "live & let live and help others live if they need the help" is the way to continue.

Harper will be out on his arse soon, coz he'll try to pull his neocon bullshit agenda & we'll have a vote of no confidance. Unlike the US govt system, a PM is only a PM for as long as the Cdn cits and the majority Cdn govt have "confidance" in him/her.

When that confidance is gone, so is the PM. :)

22. I surely wish the US could do that.
I'm so relieved for Canada that the majority didn't go right-wing. :)

6. Because he has a minority government
Basically the Liberal party is the "natural party for Canada" they had a few scandals, the voters got pissed off and voted the cons in. BUT, with the other left wing parties the left wing still holds more seats in the House of Commons. SO none of their whacko right wing shit will pass. Then sometime in the near future, the left wing parties will get together and topple the government, causing another election, in which the Libs will win.

7. LOL and right on, Lynn!
What happened in Canada would be akin to Bush having to get Ted Kennedy AND Dennis Kucinich to agree with him or bush would lose the Presidency.

The Bloc is between a rock and a hard place too because they lost some of their popular vote to the faux Cons and will have to fight the Cons to get it back so they will have to tiptoe and do a delicate dance about any support they may give to the faux Cons.

All in all, not a bad result last night, imo!

8. I like your Dennis and Ted analogy
None of my American friends understand how I -- a radical lefty -- could be happy. They think I'm putting on a brave face.

Mind if I start using your explanation on a few other forums I visit?

9. Please use the analogy as needed
I have found it the simplist way to explain how it works in comparison to the U.S. system.

11. So.....
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 04:24 PM by terrya
no change of mind vis a vis missle defense with the United States? What about a closer military co-operation with the United States, period? What about domestic issues....like same-sex marriage? Can the new Harper goverment do anything with this?

Sorry about the dumb questions.

Thanks
Terry

12. Same sex marriage
No, it's backed by the charter and the Supreme court.

13. No, Harper cannot touch any of the extreme issues his base
would like because he needs at least 32 members of the opposition to support him on any bill and all three opposition parties oppose missile defense, the war in Iraq and support same sex marriage which is also been ruled on by our Supreme Court.

Harper is hamstrung to stick to only the most modest proposals or he will lose power completely.

16. You're very welcome! I am glad you are interested in understanding!
Our system is very different from the US system of government, overall, so any time we can help explain, we are very happy to do what we can.

21. Canadians Can Also Speak Proper English
This is something that I have noticed about Canadians. We Americans speak very casually & tend to mangle the English language a lot, but Canadians always come across as so intelligent to me because they generally seem to use proper English. Oh, and you're friendly, too!:)

14. probably
Not that

Leftwing; 103+51+30 = 184

is in any way an accurate statement.

I truly never thought I'd live to see the day when any sincere, reasonable person would call the Liberal Party of Canada "left-wing".

Every left-winger who has ever died must be rolling in his/her grave.

"Middle of the road", "moderate" and all such-like crap was surely bad enough. "Progressive" is an intolerable perversion of language and history. "Left-wing"? Words fail.

Does anyone really have any idea, any more, what "left-wing" means?

19. I'm Proud of Canadians
I'm American, & while I cannot stand Harper I know that Canada hasn't suddenly turned right-wing. You showed that when a political party does something wrong (the Liberals), you can send them a message without suddenly changing all your political views. At least you are able to do this. The Republican Party needs to be sent a message too, but I wonder if the Republicans will have the sense (or the guts) to do it. If we end up with a Republican majority in Congress again in November, I will know that I belong in Canada rather than the US. I prefer people who can do the right thing when it needs to be done.
