Teck Cominco makes deal with U.S. over slag dumping

CBC News

A B.C. mining company has struck what's being described as a landmark agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to study the environmental impact of years of dumping smelter slag into the Columbia River.

The U.S. accused Teck Cominco of polluting the river — which runs south from Canada into the U.S. — with discharges from its huge lead and zinc smelter in Trail in B.C.'s Southern Interior.

The company stopped dumping slag in the river a decade ago. But by that time, tonnes of it had accumulated in Lake Roosevelt in Washington state.

The northwest regional administrator of the EPA, Michael Bogert, said the agreement is a landmark accord for his agency.

Hope CCRA has a good look at this to ascertain the category and deductibility amounts for the corporation.

Looks like the CBC has a new site. Looks really good, with easier access to the news across the country.
