2. Depends On
Your staring point.
Seems like other former empires realize the importance on maintaining an independent country in the northern part of North America. Seems to give others more influence in the affairs of things.

7. PBS was showing Rebels and Redcoats, it was great
They asked people on a bus to explain what the revolution was all about. One guy said it was about a bunch of rich guys who didn't want to pay taxes. He continued with how horrible it would have been for us if the Brits won. We would be stuck with national healthcare, slavery would have ended sooner, etc. It was pretty funny.

10. It probably should be...
From the Cambridge FactFinder (1993 Edition)

Head of State
(British monarch represented by Governor-General)
1990-(1995) Ramon John Hnatyshyn

date in bold is not from that source

More here:

Maybe I should dig out my Exploited and Sex Pistols LPs just for shits and giggles.

11. Here she's the Queen of Canada
In Canada, Her Majesty's official title is Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith. Such capacity is Her Majesty The Queen in Right of Canada. In common practice Queen Elizabeth II is referred to simply as "The Queen" or "The Queen of Canada" when in Canada

12. the Queen
Bah, even as a republican, I see no problem in keeping her for the time being. Like this Country needs any more Constitutional debates. Plus having an unpartisan head of state works well. Even if we were a Republic, I'd be against direct elections.

Now if the Royals started acting like the Swedes then I'd think or renouncing republicanism. Hell, I guess I'm not even a republican, I'm just not a monarchist.

As for this being a Sub-section, I believe that would have been resolved by the Statute of Westminster which gave all Dominion equal status to the United Kingdom. And that was back in 1931, predating repatriation.

13. me with you
Back when I was a girl guide, I used to pledge allegiance "to god mmf, the queen mmf and my country", but I think these days I'd strike out that second "mmf" and go with the original.

In our present state of evolution, we human beings generally still want/need some ultimate authority for stuff. In political terms, there has to be some final arbiter -- and constitutions don't arbitrate things all by themselves.

Having as one's final arbitrator a boring woman with a bit too much money and some tedious relations, but no effective power whatsoever, who hardly ever even comes to visit, and just getting on with business, really does work extraordinarily well hereabouts. The lunatics really do run the asylum. ;)

I'm sure there are much better systems than constitutional monarchies somewhere in the universe, but none has been devised here on earth yet. Look at the perennial top countries in that UNDP "best places to live" list:

(quick reference) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index

1. Norway
2. Sweden
3. Australia
4. Canada
5. Netherlands
6. Belgium
7. Iceland
8. United States
9. Japan
10. Ireland

The top 6 are all constitutional monarchies, as is Japan, basically. Seven out of the top ten (and Ireland evolved as part of one). Back when Canada was on top, it was 8 out of 10 (before Ireland bumped the mother monarchy off the list):

Not a bad track record.
