Question about cashing a check in Canada.....
I recently got a nice size Canadian check and I was curious if anyone knew about check cashing policies in Canada. If I go up there for summer vacation, and I have all my identification papers, can I just go into a bank and have them cash it on the spot? Is there anything I have to do, in particular, since I am not a Canadian citizen? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

1. Well
I think that they would cash it at your own bank. But in this case you would be out of luck. The best solution to me would be to sign it off to someone else and have them pay you.

The bank that gives you the money wants to be able to retrieve the funds if something doesn't work out.

In this case it would be back to your friend that deposited the cheque.

I think that you are out of luck without a bank account that can be used to cough-up the funds if the money isn't there at the end of the road.

2. May depend on the bank.
I live in Canada, and got a $35 cheque from someone that was drawn on their bank. I don't bank there (use the regional credit union), so went to her bank to cash it since it was nearby. They were willing to do it, but wanted to charge me something like $15 for the so-called service. Arseholes. :grr:

3. You can cash it
at your own bank in the states. You can even get Canadian dollars for it, if your bank is big enough. Usually you have to call first and tell them you want Canadian dollars. There will be fees, of course, but it would save you a lot of hassle.

4. Perhaps you should take a page from our ex-PM Mulroney's book
Rather than a cheque, just get someone to pass you an envelope full of cash in a hotel room. Later you can tell people you are an "international consultant".

Just kidding, but you might be interested in the story if you plan to visit Canada this summer.
