After 17 months of discussions, U.S. aerospace giant Lockheed Martin and the Canadian government have reached an agreement on the purchase of a new fleet of transport aircraft for the Canadian Forces.
Cabinet approved the agreement for the purchase of 17 C-130J tactical transport planes. The total cost of the deal, along with a long-term in-service support package, is estimated to be about $4.9 billion.
Defence Minister Peter MacKay and Public Works Minister Michael Fortier will announce the deal in Ottawa today.
The Canadian government will spend $3.2 billion to buy 17 of the aircraft and another $1.7 billion for the 20-year in-service support contract for the planes. The Canadian military currently uses the C-130 Hercules aircraft, also built by Lockheed Martin.
