Town formally adopts a 'fair trade' policy
Halton Hills council approved a new fair trade procurement policy to back up its April resolution calling on the United States to reconsider its Buy America policy, at its meeting last week.
The Halton Hills resolution is now gaining media momentum and municipal support across the country. Federation of Canadian Municipalities members will vote on it during its national conference in Whistler B.C. this weekend.
Mayor Rick Bonnette said that Premier Dalton McGuinty has also contacted him about it and the Greater Toronto Area Countryside Mayor’s Alliance recently supported the Halton Hills motion. Members intend to take the motion back to their councils for support.
“It’s a little grassfire that’s starting to grow,” said the mayor. He said more and more Canadian businesses are beginning to lose money due to the U.S. policy. He related a story about a U.S. military base that ripped out steel pipes because ‘Made in Canada’ was stamped on them.
