WHENEVER I THINK OF CANADA . . . strike that. I'm an American, therefore I tend not to think of Canada. On the rare occasion when I have considered the country that Fleet Streeters call "The Great White Waste of Time," I've regarded it, as most Americans do, as North America's attic, a mildewy recess that adds little value to the house, but serves as an excellent dead space for stashing Nazi war criminals, drawing-room socialists, and hockey goons.

Henry David Thoreau nicely summed up Americans' indifference toward our country's little buddy when he wrote, "I fear that I have not got much to say about Canada. . . . What I got by going to Canada was a cold." For the most part, Canadians occupy little disk space on our collective hard drive. Not for nothing did MTV have a game show that made contestants identify washed-up celebrities under the category "Dead or Canadian?"

If we have bothered forming opinions at all about Canadians, they've tended toward easy-pickings: that they are a docile, Zamboni-driving people who subsist on seal casserole and Molson. Their hobbies include wearing flannel, obsessing over American hegemony, exporting deadly Mad Cow disease and even deadlier Gordon Lightfoot and Nickelback albums. You can tell a lot about a nation's mediocrity index by learning that they invented synchronized swimming. Even more, by the fact that they're proud of it.

And it just goes downhill from there, staright back toward the 49th parallel... you guys must be doing something right to evoke such puerile rage from the Standard neocons! Why, they hate you almost as much as France!

1. The article told me that me & my Canadian friends like to think about
things and write letters if something bothers them. I think I will stop doing that now because someone in the Standard doesn't find it admirable. They also say I am vain with my ability to be sweet. So I think I will no longer be empathetic.

Anything else I can do for you?

NOT!

Apparently if you decide to move to Canada it will be because you have twins - one of whom had a sex change or something. So you must be some sort of weirdo to want to live in a democracy rather than Bush's new Tribal USA.

Apparently the reason why we have not been invaded has to do with all the protection the USA has afforded us (when it is not invading us I guess). Those Three oceans, the North Pole and only 90 days of sunny weather.... chicken shit!

3. What a twit!
I personally miss spending summers in Muskoka Co. I have too many fond memories of the summers I used to spend there. I never met anyone whose memory I don't cherish. ( except maybe some officers of the PP, respectful but militant ) I don't expect that Mr. Labash has ever spent any time enjoying the wonderful country to our north.

4. It's hard to get worked up over the writings of someone
who thinks they're clever in updating a bunch of tired old stereotypes.

Let him believe what he wants. I'll just have to tolerate living in one of the world's best-kept (to freepers) secrets. :eyes:

9. Here's the real reason why some Americans hate Canada.
They're jealous. They're jealous of the fact that a growing number of Americans are saying that life is better up there and are actually considering moving up there. They're jealous because Americans are moving up there. They are jealous because Canada is proving that the United States is not the best country in the world.

Just admit it "America". You'll feel better.

10. That's just purile, irrational nastiness
Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 04:57 PM by Anarcho-Socialist
As a Brit I have a deep admiration of Canada and it's people. As a historian I've always admired the fact that Canadians were the first to run to our aid during both WW1 and WW2 and the cost they paid in lives. As a person I find the Canadian character to be rational, reasonable, polite, intelligent, welcoming and understanding. If before I was born I was able to choose my country and nationality, I would have chosen to be Canadian.

14. Long-winded SOB, ain't he?
He must get paid by the word. I quit reading when I saw how long page two of this tedious little screed was. Not an original thought in the whole damned thing.

At least I assume there isn't--hell, I didn't read it!

15. I used to like travelling to the States
even when Reagan was on the throne (that was my first visit) but now it's somewhere I have to stop over on the way to Pearson from Australia.

I spent 5 weeks in Toronto (Jan/Feb just gone)and to get there I had an overnight in Hong Kong, an overnight in San Francisco and a few hours at O'Hare. The security notices, the security procedures and the ever-present melifluous voice urging me to watch out for suspicious packages reminded me a great deal of Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and his idea of perpetual war. No such feeling in Hong Kong or even at Pearson. It was really sad. I mean my intended destination was Toronto (my first visit to TO but not my last for sure) but I was looking forward to a mini visit to the States. But I hated it. I couldn't wait to get on the plane that eventually took me out of the States to Canada and on my way back the plane that took me to Hong Kong (and then home).

Bush and his mates have totally screwed up the States for me as a desirable destination and the author of this piece of crap is a dickhead.

16. Nazi war criminals? Give me a break!
At least we didn't hire war criminals after the war to develop brainwashing techniques, nuclear missiles and germ warfare.
And it's typical RW behaviour to show your ignorance and be cognizant and proud of it!
