CBC News

Days before the controversial Devils Lake diversion is set to begin operations, North Dakota officials have confirmed that construction is underway on a type of filtration system to ease Manitoba's concerns about the quality of water heading north.

The diversion project will send flood water from Devils Lake into the Sheyenne River, a tributary of the Red River. The Manitoba government and other groups have raised concerns that the lake water could contain pollutants or foreign biota that could affect the Lake Winnipeg watershed.

A spokesperson for the office of Reg Alcock, Manitoba's senior cabinet minister, agreed that no deal had yet been signed on the diversion, but said one was imminent and could come by the end of the week.

Officials with Premier Gary Doer's office also said discussions about the outlet were close to reaching a resolution, but no officials had yet signed on any dotted lines.

As I interpret this, both the federal Liberals and the provincial NDP are saying good-bye to the IJC. Well folks if that is the case expect private ownership of water.

1. This is interesting.
Thanks for posting. I didn't realize the tributarial nature of Devil's Lake.

I know it's gotten huge the last few years. I was readign something the other day saying how frightened the people are who live by it, since they're worried about being flooded at some point.

My great grandfather and his one brother homesteaded next to it in the early part of the century, so I've been taking more interest in events in this area.
