Ottawa plots retaliation
Ottawa plots retaliation

Canada considers hitting U.S. corn in softwood battle
Peter Morton and Norma Greenaway in Regina
National Post; CanWest News Service

Wednesday, August 24, 2005

Canada is stepping up pressure on the United States in the softwood-lumber dispute by considering huge punitive duties for imports of American corn, worth US$100-million a year.

Government sources told the National Post yesterday Canada is launching a formal probe of U.S. corn exports to Canada just as it looks for ways to retaliate against the United States over the softwood lumber dispute.

Canadian corn growers successfully complained to Ottawa this week that the U.S. government illegally subsidizes its corn growers.

That, Canadian farmers argued, allows American farmers to dump low-price corn in the Canadian market for everything from animal feed to ethanol gasoline.

1. When they stop 'considering', 'contemplating', 'investigating'
and actually act, I will believe them. Until them this is just more empty rhetoric that does nothing of substance.

3. I agree they need to actually do something
and I think they actually might as there is an election coming. I think that going after corn alone is not enough though. The US currently owes Canadian lumber producers over 5 billion US, if the entire market for Corn is worth $100 million we won't even be keeping pace. I think it's going to take more than that.

5. I don't think we have anything to fear
Canada is a commonwealth country, an attack on Canada would be percieved as an attack on the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the rest of the countries listed here

besides, the last time the US tried to invade Canada the white house burned (hence the name - the building was white washed to cover the scorch marks and is now the White House)

4. It's interesting that our plans for retaliation will be aimed at
Red States only.

Just wait until winter, so the dogsleds can get over the boarder.

We'll welcome you with flowers and hot chocolate.

7. lol...but that's kinda the point isn't it?
Canada doesn't do things like that. We do peace keeping, not invasion.

9. I think it's contagious. Canada has been sabre-rattling over some island
Norway or Iceland or some other icebound country is disputing some rock in the ocean with Canada.

I forget the details.

10. It's Denmark
no worries, they'll negotiate. A war between Canada and Denmark would be one of the signs of the Apocalypse.
