Environmentalists say tax breaks to oil sands should be ended
OTTAWA (CP) - It's irresponsible for Ottawa to keep subsidizing new tar-sands operations given the record profits the industry is making, environmentalists say.
The tax breaks introduced as incentives for development are no longer needed and the money should be recovered to help low-income people cope with high energy prices, said Beatrice Olivastri, executive director of Friends of the Earth.
"Who shall the government help - low-income seniors or tar sands?" she asked at a news conference Monday. "I know who I would choose."
For example, the full cost of a new tar-sands plant can be written off in its first year of operation, rather than being written off over the plant's useful life. The accelerated write-off has the effect of lowering the operator's tax bill.
