BBC Quiz: Know your (UK) rights
"Recent years have seen a raft of new laws on everything from
anti-social behaviour to the collection of DNA samples and the
introduction of community support officers.
Take our quiz - and find out how well you know your rights."

Choose answers to 10 multiple choice questions, click on the button
and see how well/badly you did. (It surprised me ... worryingly so ...)

It helps being a law student...

as well as choosing the most anti-civil liberty option (Thank you Mr Blunkett...)

4. 2 right for me.........shit. What's the deal with lock-knives anyway?
Bit worrying for me - I have a Swiss Army knife with a locking blade (and bought my brother one for Christmas). Also, I often carry a Leatherman tool (with locking blades) for work and if I'm going on a picnic or whatever.

I thought that it was only illegal to carry them in public if you had no good reason to do so - am I wrong? Needless to say, I wouldn't want to rely on the good natured opinions of a policeman to determine whether or not I was going to be arrested, but isn't there any element of common sense built into the legislation? On more than one occasion a Leatherman has really helped me out of a difficult situation by letting me fix something that I otherwise couldn't have managed....do I have to stop taking it with me in the car or to work?

5. Lock-knives are perceived as offensive weapons
... because the lock means that you are unlikely to sever your own
fingers in an attempt to injure someone else using the knife. If you
were to try to stab someone using an standard Swiss Army knife, there
is a significant chance that the blade would close during the expected
struggle. (This explanation came from a policeman many years ago when
I asked whether my pen-knife could be considered a weapon rather than
simply a useful tool.)

There again ... you could always use the fish-descaler thingy to make
them laugh themselves to death!
:-)

There were a number of questions where I'd rejected the correct answer
as me being too cynical ... silly me ...
