Former foreign secretary Robin Cook is reportedly in a serious condition in hospital after apparently collapsing while on a Highland mountain walk with friends.

The Labour MP for Livingston was near the summit of Ben Stack near Sutherland when he was taken ill, Sky News reports.

The news channel reports that the coastguard was called at around 14:30 GMT and that Mr Cook was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital near Inverness.

Further details about the MP’s condition are not yet known.

The poor chap is only 59. Hope he gets better soon.

2. medical people can tell us, but it seems a good thing he survived
the wait - it had to take some time to get the airlift to his mountain location - plus transport him to the hospital. I hope he recovers fully - the world needs men of his character.

4. This sounds very serious from the BBC link
(in tjwmason's link below):

He was flown by helicopter to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, and is understood to have received 40 minutes of resuscitation en route.

8. It's on the Guardian now. 7pm news.
Aged 59, Robin Cook dies. An awful, awful loss. I'm absolutely gutted.

Such a terrible, terrible blow to British politics. I won't be watching any coverage right now. I think if I hear Blair praising him I'll throw up.

11. Damn. The last good senior Labour politician
He was actually honest. If they were all like him, I'd vote Labour. None of the cabinet can hold a candle to him.

22. Tragic for the Labour party
as well as for Britain. The only person I can think of who comes close to Cook is Frank Dobson, and it is hard to think of anyone decent in Westminster with Cook's intellect.

13. I'm devastated
he was one of the great parliamentarians, and when it really counted he had the courage of his convictions, and actually told the truth. I harboured hopes, foolishly, that one day he would replace Bliar.
As a result of some of the posts in this thread:

I'm going to leave DU alone for a bit, before I get banned.

16. I saw that too
Some DUers seem to want to see conspiracies, often where there are none.

18. Just spent the last half hour
updating what I like to think of as the "twat list". And it's actually very encouraging, because what's left shows that a lot of DUers do have some brains and a little, or even a lot, of class.
But turning to the twats, I like to imagine them all sitting in a little circle, expostulating that Scotland Yard, whoever that shadowy organisation may be, murdered John Smith.

19. Please keep alerting,
I hope the mods can keep up with them.

Also, if you could, please alert on this one in my obituary thread:

I'll be using that feature a lot today.

I am sorry that some people don't understand how inappropriate PCT's are when a country is mourning.

And I am even sorrier about the imbeciles who just don't care.

... does excellent courses, and I shall keep going to them even though some of the patients are schizophrenic.

20. Hopefully some good can come from this,
and more in the Parliamentary Labour Party will be shamed into growing a spine and making stands they should have made in 2003. :grr:
