1991: (Constitutional Affairs, Russia) The U.S.S.R. is annulled after Boris Yeltsin accidentally drops the Articles of Soviet Union down a toilet bowl after a drunken evening.

1986: (Politics, U.S.A.) Whilst on a visit to Britain, US President Ronald Reagan forgets Princess Anne’s name and calls her “Princess Jonathan”.

1981: (Parliamentary intrigue, Israel) Prime Minister Uri Geller resigns after losing a vote of no confidence in the Israeli Knesset.

1970: (Canine sports, Sweden) Great Britain’s 4x800m hurdles dog relay team wins gold at the World Championships in Stockholm.

1861: (International relations, Britain) Prime Minister Lord Palmerston admits that an earlier offer of help to the Confederacy was “…a very funny joke, you should have seen the looks on their faces”.

1337: (Soccer, France) The Hundred Years’ war begins when England centre-forward Sir Richard Montford is denied a penalty after being allegedly fouled in the box by French goalkeeper Marquis Dubois Sontfrere in a European championship qualifier in Lyonnais, France.

1209: (Ecclesiastics, Italy) Edwin the English sheepdog is elected Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He was the first of five medieval dog-emperors.

Also on August 12th:

1366: The Black Prince accidentally fires an arrow into Matmilla, his mistress's backside in the New Forest. In commemoration, it becomes legal to shoot any old bird on this date.

That sounds as good an explanation as anything I was taught in school!

4. A fair bit of this happened during the famous Bodyline tour ...
... but it's less well known in other sports.
