Tonights football updates (Wednesday 24th August)
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 03:50 PM by ...of J.Temperance
Inverness Caledonian Thistle 6, Alloa 1 :) :) :) :)

Colchester 0, Cardiff 2.

Bolton 2, Newcastle 0 (sorry lockdown :( )

Derby 0, Grimsby 1 :)

Slavia Prague 0, Anderlecht 2 :(

Everton 0, Villareal 1 :( (1-3 on agg. if Everton fail to get 2 goals, they're out before they've begun. If Everton get 2 goals, but Villareal get another goal, Everton are still out. VERY bad luck and highly sad for Everton imho...Villareal just scored :( Everton now need THREE goals)

Aw, LOOK at Grimsby Town :)

Apologies to evermind :)

12. What's happened to Newcastle?
I could tell you, but Souness tends to spit his dummy out whenever someone questions his sanity managerial abilities.

Basically, our halfwit of a manager decided that he didn't like certain players and created situations that forced them out of the club. Having managed to rid the team of our only flair players these troublemakers we're left with a team that is about as likely to score goals as Osama Bin Forgotten is to covert to Judaism.

Souness, as a player or manager, all that sergeant-major rubbish, and I was well displeased when he was made manager. Think he's getting a bit of a raw deal at Newcastle though to be fair. The board aren't putting out the money he needs and I think they'd already decided to get rid of him a while back. Shepherd is the one I want to see frogmarched out, the club is just a cash-cow for that thief, for all his embarrassing "Geordie nation" waffle.

Souness does like spitting that dummy out though, his regular post-match excuse making and whining is laughable!

Edit to add: wahey, another Newcastle fan to complain to!

15. Saying that
I realise they have bid £17m for Owen today (!), just think it's Rooney like PR nonsense though, won't happen. :)

16. Not sure how much Shepherd is to blame
I'd look more closely at Doug Hall. From what I heard about Bobby Robson's sacking, Shepherd wanted to give him another 3 months to get things right, i.e. up until Christmas and the new transfer window. It was Hall who pressed for his immediate dismissal.

Souness has had very good financial backing in his time here. Only Man USA and Chelsea have spent more money during his time in charge.

I just want to see a manager in charge whose ideas on thinking tactically involve how to win a game, not how to pin the blame on the referee, players, fans, etc.

This is my 22nd season watching Newcastle now, and my 13th as a season ticket holder. During all that time I have never seen such boring, tedious, unadventurous football as under Souness. Bring back Ardiles! His teams might lose as much as Souness, but they were a hell of a lot more interesting to watch.

Yeah, bring back Ardiles, his inspired 1-4-5 formation was never given a proper chance!

Hadn't heard that about Shepherd wanting to give Robson more time. I accept things were already declining by then but I think Robson should have been allowed his last year in charge. We would probably have been better off for it. I despise Douglas Hall needless to say, loathe the slimy little shit. Who doesn't! Shepherd is very dodgy too though, has been for a long time so I gather...

Souness has had money and has bought some good players (Boumsong, Emre, Parker...), not sure how much net money he's had though, lot of outgoings in that time. He needs more anyway. I was fine with getting rid of Bellamy and Robert for two, not getting quality replacements in though is insane. They seem to have been quibbling over fees and such all summer but that tightness will end up costing the club millions by the end of the season. Robson seemed to get overruled on some signings, with the board seemingly getting who they wanted instead, wouldn't be surprised if Souness is facing similar problems.

Been years since I went regularly, you'll know the state of things on the pitch much better, not fun though... in the last two or three years a fair few people I know who've went for a long time (in many cases pre-Keegan) have ditched their season tickets.

The striker thing now reminds of when Bobby Shinton and Alan Shoulder played up front (heh), in them days I refused to ever believe we'd actually scored, till I saw the ref pointing at the centre circle. A goal? What?

On the scumminess of the board, you probably already know this site but it's had some media mention recently:

http://www.nufc-finances.org.uk/

"Sack the board!" Now them were the days, there was real passion in that. :)

18. Unless things change drastically soon
I won't be renewing my season ticket next year.

Broken down per game, a single home game costs me around £25 to attend. On Saturday I essentially spent £25 to watch the most boring football match I have ever attended. I've seen 0-0 draws before, but previously there has always been the chance of us scoring in the 90th minute, they have never been as pathetic as the display that I was witness to at the weekend.

We weren't simply missing a couple of players, we had no ideas. You can build the greatest team of players the world has ever seen, but ultimately if the manager doesn't have a clue what to do with them they'll continue to produce performances like those we have seen so far this season.

The latest tactics of Souness appear to be to bore the other team to sleep before sneaking in a winner in the 90th minute. Screw that, I'd rather see us put up a fight and lose 5-3 than give up and lose 2-0.

19. Don't blame you
The cost is demented nowadays, throw in the lack of atmosphere now and the dreariness on the pitch and it gets hard to justify, no matter how solvent and passionate you are.

Sounds bad. I think the thing about Newcastle fans preferring exciting 4-3 defeats is overstated but I know what you mean... it beats what Souness's idea of, ahem, entertainment is.

8. Well done Arsenal
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 04:30 PM by ...of J.Temperance
Don't think I'm deliberately omitting teams like Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U etc. It's just I like the smaller teams myself, but it's FAB if people chip in with their own teams too ;)

I can't add to my original post as times up, so I'll do it here:

Arsenal 4, Fulham 1.

Chelsea 4, WBA 0.

Everton 1, Villareal 1 (2-3 on agg.)

Tiverton 2, Mangotsfield 3.

Blackburn 0, Spurs 0.

People seem to think that WAS a goal and it was the second goal they needed :( Now it's over and Everton's out :(

Final score: Everton 1, Villareal 1 (2-3) a pity about that First Half goal for the other side. Maybe next year for Everton if they can get Top Five again this season.

I think it's high time they had a second referee, looking at the game closely on a monitor. There's been so many bad decisions by referees AND linesmen, that we really need a second opinion.

22. Don't worry, inverness is growing
and soon will have a new villiage entirely, like milton keynes between
itself and the dalcross airport, between the tesco and nairn. Then
the football team will get better and airport parking will get worse.
