I ADORED this man, today would have been his birthday
I know it's photo heavy, but he was VERY important. I haven't actually been able to look at ANY picture of him since before he left us. Getting pictures for this, has been incredibly difficult, because he meant so much and I miss him terribly. I'll never get over his loss, I'd listened to him since I was 12 years old, and if I was ever going to be away, I'd always make sure someone recorded his programmes for me. So him going was like losing a limb, and it still is nearly a year on. And I know that THOUSANDS of other people feel the same as I do.

Today, August 30th, would have been his 66th birthday. So I wanted to post something because of that. Wherever he may be, I thank him in particular for amongst others: Melt Banana and Godspeed You Black Emperor, because I certainly would NEVER have heard ANYTHING by these two bands that I love equally had it not been for John Peel.

With my chosen username, I obviously HAD to start with the above photo.

With Don Van Vliet back in the day.

With the beautifully voiced Sandy Denny.

With his Grandson, Archie.

With wife Sheila, aka The Pig.

But there isn't anyone to do that out there :(

Mark E. Smith is just plain bonkers, gosh! I'll watch that video again later. I saw that live on 'Newsnight' and it was both incredibly bizarre and hilarious, on an otherwise highly upsetting and completely depressing day.

4. That's okay
It's always nice to know of another admirer of the great man that was Peelie...and another admirer of the Mighty Fall.

Presenter: (Mark exploring mouth again) {jabbery bit} Mark, that is amazing just to listen to that er tribute to him there from {indistinct}.. that everybody, from T-Rex onwards, every generation seemed to find, or he seemed to find something for every generation, including The Fall.

{silence}

Mark: ..er, am I allowed to speak now?

Presenter: yeah, go ahead...

Mark: er, right {chuckle} er, er, yeah, whatever, whatever you say. {looks a bit puzzled}

:)

6. Thank you for the great photos
Proper tribute later in the right hour for it. For now, here's to the shared experiences he gave so many of us. (speaking of which... Godspeed You Black Emperor? Oh yes. Amazing.)

9. John Peel was my favourite ever DJ
Back in the late 70's/early 80's I would lie awake in the dark listening to him. He introduced me to Bauhaus, The Dead Kennedys, Strawberry Switchblade, Young Marble Giants, Personal Column and many more. I can still hear his voice.

I was really sad when I learned of his death, as were almost everybody of my generation that I knew. He truly touched a LOT of people.

Great pictures and thanks for the tribute...

12. Ah, there it is. I think I must have assumed it was about Robin Cook
or something. J, it's a great thread. And he was a great man - his principles remained in place, he selflessly helped many talented bands get the exposure they needed, his aim was true, and he could have read a takeaway menu and his voice would still comfort and reassure. RIP John.

13. How depressing.
He was possibly the greatest radio presenter ever.
