24 hour deadline for the Washington recount effort -MONEY NEEDED NOW!
Do you know what's been happening in Washington State? In their closest election ever, an initial recount done by machines turned up thousands of misplaced ballots that had not been counted -- the difference in ballots counted so far is just 42 votes out of 2.8 million cast in the race for governor.

We need to keep counting.

We have a little over 24 hours to request a hand count that will ensure that every vote is protected. But the mandatory state fee for the counting could exceed $1 million. The state party and Democratic candidate Christine Gregoire don't have the money after months of unprecedented get-out-the-vote efforts.

Will you help them pay the fee to protect every voter?

https://www.wa-democrats.org/contribute

A recount isn't about counting all the votes again. A "recount" really means that we take a closer look at votes that were not counted the first time. In many cases, vote-counting machines can't read a perfectly good ballot -- a hand count means that those ballots will be looked at and, if possible, counted.

Our priority has been clear from the beginning: we need an electoral system that respects the sanctity of every vote. Before the election we blew the whistle on electronic voting machines and raised hell when Republicans tried to intimidate and silence people in poor or heavily minority neighborhoods.

Since November 2nd, we have worked to get every vote the respect and protection worthy of our democracy -- even if those votes will not change the outcome. We owe it to everyone who stood in line for hours, putting aside their jobs and families to be a part of our political process.

In Washington State we have the opportunity to make sure every single vote counts and potentially discover that the people chose a Democratic governor. The state party needs the money for the hand count in the next 24 hours -- please contribute now:

3. Really, really important!
Not only will it help keep Rove from getting another governor in his klavern, but it sets a precedent.

And, as has been posted earlier, MoveOn is raising $250,000 and Kerry gave $250,000 too.

This is it!!!

if you want to await some hero to lead you to the promised land, good luck. We have to be our own heroes, JohnnyCougar.

What's that folk saying, piss in one hand and wish in the other and see which gets full faster?

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

I bet the WA hand recount goes on, and anybody who gave anything should be proud they had the sense to gamble on a coin toss like this WA hand recount is going to be.

Do we need a grassroots storming of the DNC? Might be a good idea as soon as this election season is over. Until then, maybe winning what and where we can is more important than constantly pointing fingers.

And if they had just spent HALF of that on final week advertising in Ohio and Florida, things might be different today.

That whole situation reeks to high heaven.

You better believe I'm gonna point some fingers when this WA and Ohio thing is done. Yoy think I'm going to let Al From distract me with an argument over Michael Moore?

19. Washington State is an open invitation to expose fraud!
Please donate what you can! Christine Gregoire wants to have ALL of the votes counted here in Washington State, and Dino Rossi is Bush's pet boy. Here is what he said on our local tv news tonight. Rossi said that if there is a hand recount and he doesn't win, Gregoire will be illigitimate. He is trying to stop the votes from being counted. This is our chance to expose what they may have done to steal votes here in Washington, because Gregoire will count all of the votes, and if the republican counties cheated and gave extra votes to Rossi, with a full hand recount, we'll find that out, and it could open the door to expose this election for the fraud that it is.

Please help if you can!

SEATTLE – What right is more important than the right to vote?

What position is stronger than defending the right of voters to be heard?

Dino Rossi’s friends at the Republican Party have just announced that they are going to sue King County to throw out hundreds of ballots.

28. True--Rossi is Bush's little pet and Bush got them a puppy.
Early in the campaign, there was this sickening publicity. Rossi's little girl wanted a puppy and her Daddy said no. SO, she wrote a letter to Bush asking him if he would tell her Daddy to get her a puppy. Guess what? Bush wrote a letter telling Rossi to get her a puppy so he did and the whole thing was featured on the local news.

I love puppies but this was so contrived and sappy, I couldn't believe it.

Rossi is an imposter just like the rest of them. The entire puppy issue was probably Rove's idea.

30. I just sent them 5 bucks.
The odds are good they will find hundreds if not thousands more votes in a hand recount and it's as close to 50/50 odds as you may ever see.

If Christine Gregoire gets the dough for a hand recount, it's a fifty fifty shot at winning, a flip of the coin, but one last flip.

And it provideds the opportunity to check the paper ballots against the computer tally, which is a vital exercise to perfect and standerdize so that elections are transparent and fair and the cost of recounts drops and the expertise increases.

We need a democracy audit.

Is their deadline extended? I would like to donate, but if they can't use the money, I don't see the point.

After giving money to Kerry for recounts that apparently won't be used, I'm a little uneasy about sending money to a site that says they needed it by yesterday.

36. WA state republican head--Vance
He is a Karl Rove look alike and he has been looking like his head is going to explode over this.

I have a friend who voted on a machine for Kerry here and the vote popped up Bush. This wasn't a friend of a friend or something I heard--it was directly from my good friend--a computer person and it happened to him.

So I think they are afraid. We have a lot of computer people in this state and who knows what they will find? I want the hand re-count!

...but I gave $5 anyway, and so should you!

I know a lot of you, like me, are still down in the dumps after the election, but this is one last chance to make a difference in 2004. Rossi, like Bush, lied to the voters about being a "moderate". In reality, Rossi is an ultra right-wing nutjob with a shady past.

Even if you don't live in Washington, PLEASE help keep this creep out of office.

Thanks!

43. Please Help Make This Happen- We DON'T Have a Clue How Accurate Voting...
...machines are, even the optical scan.

First, a hand count will recount ALL of the ballots, including the ones the machines would not count.

Second, there is a story that an ES&S employee admitted that the machines would miscount at least one in 10,000 times. Many counties in WA State use ES&S optical scan machines, and the largest, King, uses Diebold.

We DO NOT KNOW HOW ACCURATE THE MACHINES ARE. Even if fraud is not involved, the machines simply are not up to business standards and as has been shown by FEC certification documents that recently surfaced, they don't even meet all the FEC standards- yet get certified.

Time and again people quote the CalTech/MIT study on voting machines and FAIL to point out the study was only about residual votes- overvotes and undervotes, NOT about ACCURACY.

In that study, if you average the two types of races used, a presidential race and non-presidential race with Governor and Senate seats, you get the following, for residual votes as a percent of all votes cast:

Optical Scan- 2.50%
Paper Ballot- 2.55%
Punch Card- 3.60%
DRE (touch screen)- 4.10%
Lever Machine- 4.55%

Yes, if you don't average the two races used, you can come up with a better number for DRE's- but that also holds true for paper ballots. And paper ballots still beat out DRE's.

However, this study does not show how ACCURATE the vote counting is, only which system produced the most residual votes.

Not only is this race well within the margin of machine error, we simply don't know how accurate the machines count. The study above does not deal with that.

In Washington State, six counties used uncertified, untested software including three of the largest.

In Washington State, whenever a machine recount is done, the machines are reprogrammed. That's supposed to be done so only the one race is counted, although as a matter of good operating procedure, checking on the other races while you're at it would be a good thing.

We have a chance to hand recount the entire state- and about time. Please help us.

when the vote difference is less than a 1/10000th of the vote, and machines are prone to 2/100th error. The math works.

But I take it someone who gives up on this probably didn't do too well in math.

Oh, and nice job, Liz.
