I thought I'd share the first couple of paragraphs of this work of FICTION.

Republican Moderates Break From Party
Unprecedented Congressional Hearings Slated for Next Week

WASHINGTON, December 23, 2004 - Republican moderates in the House and Senate broke party ranks, voting to authorize a joint committee of Congress to investigate the widening 2004 Presidential Election scandal. The vote clears the way for Congress to investigate whether the certifications of electors from Florida and Ohio, as well as those from several smaller states, were fraudulent.

“We all want to get the truth,” said a senior Republican aide, adding that grass roots efforts to initiate immediate recall efforts of members who voted against formation of the committee ”were not a factor” in the Moderates’ decision.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will convene next week to hear the Bush/Cheney Campaign’s appeal of the Ohio Supreme Court decision calling for a statewide hand count of election day and absentee ballots. With the Court potentially deadlocked at 4-4 following the sudden passing of Chief Justice Rehnquist, speculation continued on whether President Bush will use his powers to issue a Christmas Day “recess appointment” in advance of the hearing. A senior White House aide denied that the President had already selected outgoing Attorney General John Ashcroft.
