Full page advertising in NYT - DU media taskforce searched!
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 12:18 PM by myschkin
From another thread:

myschkin:

"What about placards, advertising in newspapers (see "Firefox") a.s.l.? But you need money for this...

What about an advertising in a mainstream newspaper (full of neutral infos and email-address, website a.s.l.) - sponsored by the grassroots movement?"

--

Laura PackYourBags:

"Yes, one of those full page ads. What about all the movie stars - Babs, Rob Reiner, the Boss, etc. They put their hearts and money into this. Wonder how we could contact them?"

--

momzno1:

"we banded together to raise 150,000 for the recount in 4 days!!

we could raise enough money to do something big like a full page advertisement in a major paper. Or we could do this in all our local papers... "

--

Laura PackYourBags:

"If we can get a consortium of big money demos/celebs to buy full page ads in all the major newspapers....It would be a start - they can pay for a slick ad agency. But it can't have their names on it - some other group, carefully picked, would have to be the front. Something like "Fair Election" something..."

--

understandinglife:

"Suggest you contact MoveOn and The Alliance for Democracy... .....and see if they will fund raise for full page ads in the NYTimes, LATimes, WaPo, ???

....and see if MoveOn would sponsor an digital media contest for a 30 sec ads -- perhaps the theme could be "Did Bush Know?" or "14 Trillion to 1: I don't think so!" or "Prove My Vote Counts" or "Cyber's fine but I prefer my democracy on paper!"......

Peace."

--

That's where we are. Let's go on...

Guerilla marketing uses unconventional means of distributing a message.

Viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message's exposure and influence. Viral marketing often comes about because of "buzz".

Before the election I was using guerilla marketing in my GOTV street canvassing. Some DUers did join me but it was not nearly enough to create media buzz. People of course were phone banking, canvassing and writing LTTES, all of which were very important before the election. Now that we have time on our hands and an army of hopefully willing participants, IMHO a brilliant way to take the next step and get the word out to those who do not frequent lefty web sites is:

What we can do right now is use poor man's advertising and free delivery systems, ie. DUers to spread the immediate message, that the election was fraudulent.

Right NOW we at DU CAN just like the mean girls in highschool start a whisper campaign against the chimp's reputation. How you ask? By using guerilla and viral marketing techniques. That means using unconventional means of delivering a message that creates buzz, ie viral marketing.

Do this:

download the file below and got to Kinkos and make copies.

BUSH CHEATED is color but can be printed and
photocopied B&W to save $$$. They print 2 to a sheet, so you will have to cut them.

download this and other files here:

http://somnamblst.tripod.com /

Use the BUSH CHEATED to flyer cars or even BETTER...

Buy a can of 3M Super 77 spray adhesive from staples and glue the BUSH CHEATED graphic to metal utility poles, bus stop shelters, advertising benchs, newspaper racks etc. let your inner anarchist express itself. If enough people do this then the masses will become aware AND just like highschool Bush's reputation will be ruined.

This is something we can do RIGHT NOW. No dreaming just ACTION. I've started. I challenge everyone on DU to commit to disseminating at least 10 per day.

I had hoped to plaster Columbus at the rally yesterday with both BUSH CHEATED & Blackwell RECUSE, but the wind was so bad it would have been impossible. I did however do some bus stop shelters and utility poles near campus yesterday in Cincinnati and none of my handiwork has been peeled off.

14. Recommendation: Stick to well-vetted info in ad. Non-partisan is best.
There's a lot of disinfo floating about. Try to avoid anything that is not fully confirmed in advertising. This is a patriotic nonpartisan issue. We need all our votes to count. Don't get sucked into Republican-bashing because it will discredit your message. Many can be won over if you sound sane and reasonable and not axe-grinding.

2. I'm in. Let's make a specific action plan.
1) Regarding Advertising-
A. We need to raise money for this by contacting possible revenue sources. We should contact Randy Rhodes, Mike Malloy and Laura Flanders, William Rivers Pitt, Greg Palast, etc. to enlist their help for accessing these groups and individuals since they have access to some major players that we don't. Other ideas on who we might approach?

Please list your suggestions here on who we should approach:
a. George Soros
b MoveOn (it's worth a try but I'm not sure about them now)
c Alliance for Democracy
d- ? OTHER IDEAS

2) We need a powerful, non-partisan message to inspire individuals and groups to join us in raising funds to raise awareness. Post ideas here (here are some that I've gathered)
a. Fair Elections
b Prove My Vote Counts
c Votergate 2004--DEMAND THE TRUTH
d "Question the Election- Our Democracy is at Risk" (my message to my newsletter readers)
e- ? Other ideas here

3) We need a press release and mission statement to send to these people/groups once we identify them and know we are able to get to them directly. Anyone want to create something that states exactly what we are asking for? WE need to be specific in what we are requesting.

4) We should study what they did in the Ukraine. How did they get the word out to millions of their citizens? Was it because they had the support of the American government to take out ads and get the word out (unlike here)? How did they do it?

5) We need to LINK ALL OF THE GROUPS TOGETHER- there are hundreds of us now out there - how can we do this and form one big umbrella organization? There are web pages showing them all- but we need ONE MAJOR GROUP to oversee this and coordinate the efforts for rallies, fund raising, campaigns, etc. Any ideas on how to approach this?

Can Truthout.org help here?

Time is running out and we need to take action. Massive Action. AND we need the world- national and international-- to know about this.

(I feel much better now. Thanks for the opportunity to post this stuff!)

10. great!

Great input. Thanks.

I think there are a lot of people who could sponsor this... Especially:

a) famous persons like Soros, Leonardo, Susan...

b) the Grassroots-Movement - everybody of us... (see Dean, recount of Ohio etc.)

Somebody have to structure everything, make contacts...

There has to be a whole staff-team. Some persons who are responsible and give reports to the DU-community...

Unfortunataly I'm out because I'm here from Europe - I just can give ideas and feedback... :-/

--

I like "Fair Elections", there is no hate in it, people will be "open" to it - "Votergate" is a bit too hard..

bo.elkjaer@eb.dk -- Danish Reporter, Bo Elkjaer --reporting about US election fraud in 2004

Urdur.Gunnarsdottir@odihr.pl -- OSCE - international election monitors

nell@fairelection.us -- Fair Elections -- international election monitors

To get them to admit the election stunk would be a big help.

15. URGENT ALERT! Banks to Stop Issuing ATM Reciepts!
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 02:40 PM by Wordie
The above would be printed IN LARGE TYPE:

Then, in smaller type:
Got your attention, did we? Well, actually, banks still plan to keep issuing ATM receipts, but did you know that in many places, the voting machines that we used in 2004 didn't have any paper trail, so that NOBODY could audit or double check the accuracy of the vote? You wouldn't accept a bank refusing to issue you a receipt, why accept this offense against your democratic rights? Your money is important to you, the right to vote and to have your vote counted is infinitely more valuable. <Organizational info here, asking for action>

I guess this could be modified depending on who the audience might be. It needs work, perhaps, but it might get people's attention.

8. I think a good idea is to advertise in University papers for several reaso
ns. First, they are more open-minded and smaller, so the ad is more likely to get the interest of some of the editors, so it may be ocvered. Plus, Univ. newspapers are cheaper and we can advertise action and the such, which will turn out to be a huge key in this thing.

11. yes

I think for advertising in an University paper we can use something like this: "get over it"..ask them..."get over democracy?" (see above) > because they are more open.

But for bigger newspapers (like NYT, WP) we need a neutral, just informative message...

The origin of this idea was that people are not INFORMED about the facts. So just give them the informations when the media don't do it.

16. Progressive Democrats are already starting media blitz!
This is a great thing guys- Progressive Democrats of America www.pdamarica.org have already started the ball rolling and are mobilizing many groups in DC NOW PLEASE SUPPORT THEM. Read Kevin from PDA's post and his follow up request (see below). HE NEEDS Samples of our letters to media, to congress, etc. and they have invested money into a computer program to blitz and blast media (see second post below). They need our help and our input as well. Here's the post link"

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

"This will be a huge blitz campaign starting tomorrow. Conyers is sticking his neck out again (like in 2000) and PDA and its activist base, and YOU will be there to support him. We want to get the buzz about this far and wide, so that Conyers can take the hearing TO OHIO! We want to hear from you.. the activists as well

Draft your best Letter to Congress to urge members to join in on this action. Get them to attend the hearings on Wednesday (see details here: http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/120404W.shtml ) Ask them to sign on to the GAO Letter calling for the investigation!
Then draft a letter to the media urging them to cover this!

We are taking several letters from the grassroots, several from our staff, several from policy wonks, and want several from you all to go to our committee. We will then use those for an urgent action we hope to put online tonight.

Follow up post from Kevin at PDA:

We just popped $6k for this software to get YOUR letters out to the media, to self organize and flood the local AND national media AND your members of congress. This is the backend, not public yet, and NOT online yet. To get a rough idea... here is is http://capwiz.com/pdamerica

I NEED CONTENT!!! FROM YOU!!! NOT THE POLICY WONKS!!!

I TRUST DU'ers WAAAAYYY before i trust these "hill" guys!

Please send me versions of the letters you propose to send to CONGRESS (Short and sweet and powerful) and versions of letter to the MEDIA.. with A LOT OF FACTS in that one.

I want to use a template from a DU before i use these guys. PLEASE HELP ME HELP YA'LL!!!! The team is working overtime now...

We are trying to coordinate the media and get our caucuses abuzz.
