"The Great Ohio Robbery"- own the language, frame the debate
T-GOR, the great ohio robbery.
Pronounced Tee-Gor.

Catchy title for all that happened when bush stole the election.

Long lines, few machines, machines undeployed, Warren County locking out reporters during the count, emachines with secret insides, on and on.

REVOTE, not just recount, needed. Replace Blackwell with a Judicial Special Master.

See Activism forum thread,

WHEN'S THE DAMNED SICKOUT ?!?!

thread was by career prole

1. don't think of an elephant
Here in Essex County, NJ, one DFA meet-up is going to talk about ways of reframing the message, if that is the correct phrase. Based on a book by George Lakoff, Don't Think of an Elephant. It's about something that the Republicans seem to be good at already. If you tell someone not to think of an elephant, what do they do? They think of an elephant (forgive me if I am explaining something already very familiar).

The book is available at www.DFAbooklist.org, and there are essays posted on the Rockridge Institute website at www.rockridgeinstitute.org.

We need to learn to frame the message. Rove is a master.

2. Rove is a master of evil and mind control.
I think we need to get our message out responsibly-without the rovian technique of repeated lies by multi sources ie MIND CONTROL. After this election we need to focus on bringing down fox and other right wing media that spread LIES!

4. Lakoff stresses responsibility. Read the book before you slam it.
He says the Radical RW do two things. They reframe the debate (good) and use Orwellian language (lies - bad).

As for lies themselves, people accept some degree of lying in life, so we need to frame that issue as "betrayal of trust."

3. I think you mean: "own the media, frame the debate"

How much does one of those media's cost anyway.

How about a funding drive!!! To buy some mainstream media. It can be a long term project.

5. Say we raised 100-200 Million
How are we going to get on the cable systems? Who owns the cable and satellite systems? Well Murdoch for one, Time Warner, Comcast, etc....all headed by Republicans. Do you think they want to upset the GOP machine? They all need favors in Washington. They didn't buy up the media to turn around and let lefties in.

Look how many under-performing radio stations there are. Yet AAR after a year and good and growing ratings, Air America has only 40 stations?
The radio station group owners know which side there bread is buttered.

What we need to fight for first is Telecommunication Reform, no one company should be able to control thousands of radio stations. We need more community licenses that cannot be purchased by conglomerates or people outside the community.

Telecommunication reform and electoral reform (BBV issue address and IRV, public finance) are the two most important things the left needs. The whole deck is stacked against us. I wish there was a MOVE ON type organization for both issues.

In the meantime we could be on the bleeding edge of Internet television distribution. There is no reason you can't do TV over IP like we now do Voice over IP. Think about a box that works like a TIVO but doesn't record a broadcast channel. It downloads a DIVX file from a P2P type network or streams (there are P2P streaming systems as well.) P2P minimizes bandwidth at the head end (The server.)

Anyone know of any liberal project to head this up? You could run this type of thing on a cheap Linux box in a AV case form factor. Thats exactly what a TIVO is: a Linux box made to look like a AV box.

6. Man, I cut the cable cord long ago
Got rid of the TV.

I still am able to watch the shows I like, free, with no adds. Bittorrent. Everything thats on TV can be found. Who'd wanna pay for that.

What we should all do is work to undermine copyright, and defend the internet from DRM bastards. Copyright law is such a huge fuckin issue, and the US is doing some really really scary things to it, but it gets no discussion (I guess the media don;t wanna - I wonder why_)

I would like to know where the "Piracy Deterrent and Education Act" is in the process.

7. Democracy Now
One thing we can to is to support independent media. The internet is an opportunity to bypass the power of corporate media. For instance, Democracy Now has an interesting, alternative coverage of US and world news. They are broadcasted on many radios, by satellite, and video and audio streams are available on the internet. Independent, no ads, just foundation and viewer support.

It's professionally done, and it does cover that half of the story that most mainstream media will leave out through political or corporate pressure.
