OUR PLEA TO THE INTERNATIONAL MEDIA
Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 01:57 AM by Alizaryn
(continued from the IDEA thread)

If I heard the committee today correctly they attempted to communicate the absolute necessity for us to:

1.) Remain vocal and energetic
2.) Express our views regarding the situation in Ohio and the election system in general to the "other" members of the government who have chosen to ignore or dismiss the issue.
3.) Continue to gather FACTS regarding irregularities.
4.) Encourage the media to cover the facts of the situation, in hopes to at the very least embarrass those ignoring the issue to become involved.

What if….

Since the MSM is not covering the situation as strongly as they reasonably should be, my proposal is for "us" to compose a press release type synopsis of the irregularities, the response by our government (The Conyers’ Forum with refusals of the republican members to attend), the coverage or the Ukraine Election irregularities by MSM vs. their coverage of our irregularities.

We could then swamp the foreign press sources with this "press release" asking for help. I find it hard to fathom how our MSM and those republicans dismissing this issue could rationalize the world becoming our watchdog while they sleep.

This might just be what the committee meant when "mentioning" the possibility of embarrassing the sleeping majority party into action.

Ideas?

This is the letter we came up with so far.

Dear Friend,

This is awkward but we need to ask for your help. Many of us are frustrated and coming up short on getting the “free press” in our country to cover the travesty that is being called a fair election in our country (some wonder if they have been silenced). No, we are not from the Ukraine, the Ukraine’s election irregularities receive ample coverage here, we are citizens of the United States of America. The 2004 election was contaminated.

The situation we now find ourselves in is one where the Democratic Head of the Judiciary Committee has formed a group with other congressmen to objectively examine the irregularities the citizens of the nation have communicated to them. Representative Conyers is a brave man as are his colleagues. Today they held a forum “ Judiciary Democratic Forum Preserving Democracy - What Went Wrong in Ohio” in Washington DC. Many statements were gathered regarding: Voter intimidation, Exit Polls vs. Actual Vote Numbers, (Same thing our administration had such a fit over in Ukraine), Citizens being disenfranchised through allocation of polling machines, Faulty election machines and areas where Election observers and the press were locked out from being able to view the counting due to claims, later proved untrue, that the FBI and Homeland Security had declared the area a high risk. These are a few of the statements, there are MANY more.

We are saddened to say that not one Republican committee member joined the process to listen to the people’s voices although Representative Conyers invited them.
We are saddened to say that not one Main Stream Media Station covered this forum, and thankful to CSPAN and Keith Olbermann of MSNBC for doing so.

The recount in Ohio will begin soon and many investigators feel that there is a real chance for the final total to show that the wrong man conceded. In addition, election fraud is suspected, and evidence for this fraud will be part of the litigation that is being filed in Ohio. The committee formed by Representative Conyers has promised to go to Ohio and hold hearings however, without the Republicans joining the effort the perceived legitimacy of the hearings will be weakened. Without the MAINSTREAM media covering it, ir will be difficult to force the Republicans to be accountable to this process. Then they (Republicans) and much of the public the will ignore the whole situation. This situation is dangerous, not only with respect to the integrity and validity to the results of this election, but also to all future elections in our country. OUR DEMOCRACY IS IN CRISIS... therefore our plea to your journalists.

We need your help to look at AND research the story and use your free press to speak for us while our press sleeps.
Further, we need your help to use your free press to ask why it is that this current administration in the United States can find the election process in the Ukraine abhorant, yet choses to ignore potentially widespread election irregularities in the United States.

We need your help if you can find it within yourselves to give. If you have any questions or need for information we will be glad to help.

Sincerely,

(A link to Rep Conyers Committee and a decent list of some irregularities) http://www.independentmediasource.com/

1. Good thread name
Thank you again for starting this.
Like I already posted, some DUer already gathered a list of Canadian media contacts. Someone here must recall who that was.
Want to parse out the regions of the world?

3. Also might suggest a formal press release in standard form
from an official organisation. Does DU count? Would they be willing to offer a press release writing competition? I'd sure like to join that contest.

Keep in mind all press releases need to have contact information of the media representative, both phone number and e-mail.

8. It makes total sense.
Democracy in danger, send help. However, how to accurately convey that in a media friendly press release style that won't be ignored is more difficult. Which is why I proposed the contest. If there's anything to get the creative juices flowing, it's a little healthy competition!

Sure, why not. Also Rainbow/Push might be worth a try.

Remember, the more credible the source, the more likely this will be picked up.

Bigger Than Watergate!

The story you are about to read is in this writer's view the biggest political scandal in American history, if not global history. And it is being broken today here in New Zealand.

This story cuts to the bone the machinery of democracy in America today. Democracy is the only protection we have against despotic and arbitrary government, and this story is deeply disturbing.

Does the 'Media Blaster'
automatically route information to multiple news media?
Looked at a couple of the examples and still not clear.
Anyway, this sounds like a very good way to do this.
Does anyone object to tommcintyre's idea? Otherwise let's do it.

like I said, we really should think about putting this in terms media people are comfortable with. I think little will come from just e-mailing a letter. I like the idea, but does it have the maximum impact it deserves? Maybe we should hold off until we've perfected our pitch. Just my take on it.

43. I could do, it you want.
But in appealing to the professionalism of the media, a great deal of the personalisation would be lost. Like for example, a good letter seeking to resonate with the emotions of our fellow man could start out "Dear Friends," but if you head a press release like that, you'd be likely to get a few strange looks. I'm just wondering what the best compromise would be, and at that, if a compromise would even be the best option. I still think we might need a separate venture, spearheaded by a reputable cause that is likely to draw notice from foreign news directors.

45. Both professionalism and humanism (for lack of another word)
have their own unique power. I'm not sure which would be more appropriate or effective.. a professional submittion of facts or an innocent basic human plea. I initially felt the plea was the way to go, plus it allowed me to vent but I'm open to other opinions. If you are up to the press release form we could then compare them and get some opinions as to which the majority thought was more workable.

As for getting a name..names to join in, that would be great, I just do not know how to go about it. My knowledge in that avenue consists of sending out "thank you" and "opinions" to general email contacts. Time is of an essence at this point.

Im in the same boat, I know exactly what you mean, but I do agree completely with this cause, and felt that it deserved as much attention as we could give it.

I'm not even sure what the best option would be. I think we're all in the same boat, as, we've never tried to rescue a democracy before.

to to volunteer for the recount in Ohio, to make a statement to the press concerning the vote in Ohio and other states which suffered significant voting irregularities, and to get involved with making every vote count.
http://www.independentmediasource.com/voteintegrity_UU_sa.htm

A relatively novice Duer supplied all the above info. I probably explained it better (I'm a little burnt out right now from updating the Nat Media blaster). So hold on, I'm going to go get the info I PM'd to them. Hopefully, it will be clearer. If not, ask me specific questions about what is still not clear.

I'll be right back.

Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 02:20 AM by tommcintyre
<I suggest you go try one of the blasters right now, that will probably answer a lot of questions, and make it much clearer how it works.>

>Prep to build a new blaster:
>1)- The email addresses: Submit each of the sets of 98 like
>this (";" or "," delimited):
>
>senatewatch@independentmediasource.com ;senator@akaka.senate.gov;etc

>No need to submit both ";" and "," sets - I can convert them
>easily - just make sure there are no spaces. Test each set
>easily by pasting edit: the groups one at a time into your email programs
>"To: field, and send a test message with the subject "Test -
>please delete" and no body message. No one seems to mind this,
>and if you have bad addys (or you didn't get all your commas
>or semicolons in, the msg won't even go).
>
>2)- The list of recipients: This is easy. Just create it the
>way you want in notepad, etc. and you can paste it into a PM
>to me (along with the delimited em addys and the two letters
>below of course). Here are a couple of examples (as you can
>see, I mostly just lifted them off the web):
>
>--------------------------------------------------------------
>
>Sorry, you had more work, since the blaster doesn't already
>exist.
>
>Here is the remainder that is needed once the blaster is up
>and running:
>
>What I need from anyone that wants to use this tool is:
>
>1 - A letter to the receiver (UU Churches) and one (or more)
>subject headline(s).
>Examples:
>http://www.independentmediasource.com/senatevote.htm
>
>
>2 - A letter to "email to friends" motivating them to blast
>too ,and subject headline.
>Example:
>
>Suggestion: Make it easy on yourself. "Borrow" from other
>Blaster letters (or ones you find at DU, etc.) as long as they
>are customized to your audience and subject matter.
>
>------------------------------------------------------------------
>
>I will provide: The web page(s), and set it all up.
>

>One of the nice things about this is that I can quickly set up
>the page(s), like I did for the Senate blaster (it took me
>less then 24 hours), and I can run many simultaneously.
>
>I will keep the Blasters up indefinitely, as long as the

35. I like the idea of INFORMING the international media
But not waving an SOS flag!! I was thinking about this a lot today, that is, how the rest of the world must be viewing our situation and how we are handling it. It must be as weird, bizarre, amazing, frightening, to them as it is to us. The good side is, hopefully they will not hate us so much, now that they know we are being taken over by a dictatorship. I do hope they are running the stories about voter fraud and disenfranchisements, but maybe we could retain some dignity by letting it play out on its own for awhile longer while we work on it internally?

44. Break the contents up into sections with subheads and bullets
I.e.,

What happened: (the forum, its purpose and its genesis, including the list of problems that were discussed)

What went right: (including who was there and what they are doing, the coverage the event received and the fraud reporting that is being done)

What went wrong: (including who wasn't there and what they are not doing, lockdown by mainstream media on events and on actions being taken to remedy)

What is being done: (specific actions that are being taken and planned to remedy)

What needs to be done: (specific actions that citizens groups, representatives and the media can help to remedy)

68. Guardian emails
For the Guardian, also try:

editor@mediaguardian.co.uk
and Media.Guardian%GNL@guardian.co.uk

I got through using the former address a while ago with some points about the absence of a proper inquest into the possible murder of Dr. David Kelly (top British expert on WMD control); replies came from the latter address.

Media Guardan deals with issues of special interest to media insiders.

Hope this helps.

Believe it or not, less than half an hour ago, I sent an e-mail to the news editor of the Glasgow Herald asking them to cover the hearings. The press release would have said it so much more eloquently.

Once a final press release is done, I will be glad to contact them again.

Here's a good way to locate media outlets:
This is on Yahoo:

http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/Countries/Australia/News_and_Media/Radio/Personalities/

Go to Yahoo, type it in as shown above for each country/ type of media outlet. It shows you links to each outlet or personality.

163. SBS would probably be the best bet
Although govt owned, it is very left wing and has a limited audience, but excellent.

ABC TV and radio, also govt owned but left-leaning. ABC TV news shows: 4 Corners, 7.30 Report, Lateline. ABC radio: AM, PM, World Today (Radio National).

Newspaper: Sydney Morning Herald, The Age owned by Fairfax, fairly decent coverage.

Most of the others Murdoch owned (nuff said).

You guys are fantastic.

Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 04:20 AM by tommcintyre
since I have feeling the list is at least two years old. Also, obviously there are to many here to send to all. It is much better to limit your list to 100 to, say, 400 total (4 sets), since I believe most people would get overwhelmed with more. One solution is to put all the biggest from each country in the first group of 98. That way they will reach the most important ones even if they are only willing to send out to one group (click their email send button just once).

65. Contact in Germany
I am currently living in Regensburg, Germany. I speak a fair amount of German-- so let me know what you would like to post in a German paper and I can see what I can do.

Pretty much all of the papers are printed in German so a translation would be helpful.

76. If you know of an investigative news TV program in Germany...
please find their web page and see if they have an online forum - please talk to those on the forums and alert the people about what's going on. Start a buzz with international bloggers. :) Thanks!

159. Thanks Ginger. I am going to go ahead and send some of the

64. Ho. From an international perspective,

I made an effort to separate the wheat from the chaff in the OSCE observers' preliminary findings. Not exactly what one would call a clean bill of health...

Hope this isn´t a dupe and the html span formatting comes through... + apologies for length of post.

ORGANIZATION FOR SECURITY AND CO-OPERATION IN EUROPE ELECTION OBSERVATION MISSION (EOM)

PRELIMINARY FINDINGS

Overview

The 2 November elections in the United States mostly met the commitments agreed to by the 55 OSCE participating States in the Copenhagen Document of 1990 ... However, a number of significant issues were brought to theattention of the EOM as set out below.

HAVA ... was ... a political compromise and left a number of questions to be addressed in its implementation. This in turn created new problems, such as varying interpretations of the rules on provisional balloting... It is to be hoped that future reforms will further enhance consistency regarding the following: voter registration criteria and procedures; rules for issuing, verifying and counting provisional ballots; voter identification requirements; absentee voting by eligible citizens living abroad.

The performance of state and county election officials – mostly nominated by political parties ... the way in which election administrators are appointed may raise questions of possible conflict of interest, in particular when election officials run for office or act as campaign managers.

Allegations of electoral fraud and voter suppression, primarily among minorities, were widely reported and presented to the EOM in the pre-election period. The EOM is concerned that the widespread nature of these allegations may undermine confidence in the electoral process. A coherent approach to such issues is highly desirable, addressing both fraud prevention and ensuring full enfranchisement. Suffrage is best protected when both election administrators and voters themselves take responsibility for ensuring that voter lists are accurately and well-maintained.

OSCE observers were able to assess aspects of the preelection environment and were granted access to polling stations in a number of states, sometimes only in specific counties. However, in other states, access was not possible or was limited... Congress and individual states should consider introducing legal provisions allowing unimpeded access to all stages of the election process for international observers who have been invited to observe the elections by the US Government. Similar provisions should extend to domestic nonpartisan observers. This would further enhance transparency and bring state law fully in line with the United States’ international commitments.

Election day proceeded in an orderly and peaceful manner. There were, however, some concerns, for instance in relation to the use of provisional ballots and occasional problems with DRE (direct recording electronic) machines. Very long queues were reported in many areas, with polling stations lacking the capacity to ensure a reasonably prompt throughput of voters. Delays may have been exacerbated by the fact that election day voting took place during working hours. Significant delays at the polling station are likely to deter some voters from voting and may restrict the right to vote.

Background and electoral framework

The legal framework for elections comprised a number of federal acts providing minimum standards for the conduct of elections, individual states’ election laws and county regulations. Most aspects of the election, especially those relating to election day procedures, were governed by state law, with further significant variations occurring from one county to another within states. This high degree of decentralization fosters widely differing approaches to the conduct of elections across the country.

Pre-election Findings

There were allegations of voter fraud which focused mainly on the accuracy of the voter lists and the need to ensure that votes were only cast by those entitled to do so. These included references to voting by persons ineligible to cast a ballot, multiple voting and unlawful voting by ex-felons. Such concerns were addressed in part by the use of challenge procedures, which allowed party representatives, voters and poll workers to confront voters directly in the polling station and challenge their eligibility to vote. However, the EOM is concerned that even the prospect of such challenges might have the effect of deterring participation by legitimate voters. Allegations about voter disenfranchisement and so-called voter suppression were also widely aired. It was claimed that such practices included non-processing of voter registration applications, the improper removal of eligible voters from voter lists, harassment and intimidation of voters. While recognizing the seriousness of the above allegations, the EOM was not provided with first-hand evidence to substantiate them or to demonstrate that such practices were widespread or systematic.

Absentee and early voting was strongly encouraged by the major political parties, with considerable effect... The EOM noted that there are no uniform standards for processing absentee ballots. It was also aware that in some states absentee voters abroad were permitted to send their ballots by fax, having signed a secrecy waiver. While this practice makes it easier for voters abroad to cast their vote, voting by fax compromises the secrecy of the ballot.

In a number of states, citizens who have been convicted of any felony (a criminal offence more serious than a misdemeanor) are deprived of their voting rights, in some states for life. In this respect the restriction on the right to vote is not made proportionate to the seriousness of the criminal offence. In any event it is desirable that voter qualifications for federal elections are uniform. Otherwise, voters in different states do not enjoy equal suffrage.

One of HAVA’s central objectives was the replacement of lever and punch card voting machines... Given that the current federal standards for election technology are not mandatory, there are no uniform certification procedures. This may account in part for the reported distrust of DREs, especially touch screen machines, a distrust compounded by the decertification of certain DREs in California. In the absence of uniform certification standards, safeguards which do not entirely depend on electronic data, would enhance public confidence in the DREs. The most obvious solution would be the prompt introduction of a paper audit trail, which appears to have been successfully implemented in certain areas. Consideration could also be given to enhancing the role of the national certification agency (the National Institute for Standards and Technology) and the EAC in this area.

Provisional ballots have been introduced nationwide except in those states with sameday voter registration or no voter registration at all. Under this procedure, voters who claim to be registered but whose names do not appear on the polling station voter lists are permitted to cast a provisional ballot. Such ballots are only counted if a voter’s eligibility is subsequently verified by the polling officials. While this innovation was intended to ensure enfranchisement of voters whose names were improperly omitted from the voter register, its introduction has created problems of its own. In particular, the statutory text is ambiguous as to whether the voter must cast the ballot in his/her allocated precinct for the provisional ballot to be counted. The statutory provisions have been litigated in a number of states and have been interpreted differently by different courts. It is highly desirable that this ambiguity is resolved in a consistent and timely manner. Additionally, deadlines for verification and counting of provisional ballots vary widely from state to state and have the potential to delay announcement of final results at the federal level.

Election Day Findings

Election day was characterized by very high turnout, resulting in long queues and pressure on poll workers at some polling stations. It seems likely that protracted waiting periods may have deterred or prevented some voters from participating in the election, particularly those who were working on 2 November and were not given time off by their employers.

Poll workers displayed varying levels of knowledge on correct procedures. It was not clear that poll workers had generally received sufficient training to perform their functions.

OSCE observers were granted access to polling stations in a number of states. Access was sometimes limited to specific counties or to specific polling stations within a particular county. In those places where access was granted, OSCE observers noted that the key elements of HAVA were being implemented. There were, however, a number of concerns. Specifically, there was considerable confusion and varying approaches from one state to another regarding the use of provisional ballots. The prompt release of an authoritative record of the number of provisional ballots cast would contribute to clarity in announcing results. Occasional faults and breakdowns of DRE machines sometimes resulted in delays for voters while election officials sought technical support or advice. Observers also noted that some voters, mostly but not exclusively the elderly, had difficulties with newer voting technologies, necessitating assistance by poll workers.

Some concerns were expressed by observers regarding the secrecy of the vote due to the positioning of the voting machines in polling stations. Political party observers were present in many polling stations, although domestic non-partisan observers often had no legal right to such access.

Annex I: Copenhagen Document (extracts) - Document of the Copenhagen Meeting of the Conference on the Human Dimension of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe, 29 June 1990

Key provisions on international election standards:

(6) The participating States declare that the will of the people, freely and fairly expressed through periodic and genuine elections, is the basis of the authority and legitimacy of all government. The participating States will accordingly respect the right of their citizens to take part in the governing of their country, either directly or through representatives freely chosen by them through fair electoral processes. They recognize their responsibility to defend and protect, in accordance with their laws, their international human rights obligations and their international commitments, the democratic order freely established through the will of the people against the activities of persons, groups or organizations that engage in or refuse to renounce terrorism or violence aimed at the overthrow of that order or of that of another participating State.

(7) To ensure that the will of the people serves as the basis of the authority of government, the participating States will

(7.3) - guarantee universal and equal suffrage to adult citizens;

(7.4) - ensure that votes are cast by secret ballot or by equivalent free voting procedure, and that they are counted and reported honestly with the official results made public;

(7.8) - provide that no legal or administrative obstacle stands in the way of unimpeded access to the media on a non-discriminatory basis for all political groupings and individuals wishing to participate in the electoral process;

(7.9) - ensure that candidates who obtain the necessary number of votes required by law are duly installed in office and are permitted to remain in office until their term expires or is otherwise brought to an end in a manner that is regulated by law in conformity with democratic parliamentary and constitutional procedures.

66. Here is BBC and Le Monde websites, and letter I sent to them

Great Idea !

If the World Wide media starts to cover it, that would put pressure on the lackeys in the American media to cover it, and if this picks up steam, the World media attention could legitimize and publicize the issue to an extent that we could ask the U.N. to look into the
U.S. Election ( Yes, I know that sounds very Pollyanna right now, but
6 months from now, who knows ? )

Below are the websites to email BBC and Le Monde.

I sent them both the latest Madsen story on the Curtis revelations,
but I don't think they'll pay any attention until they get hundreds
of emails on this issue.

You can send a message to the Le Monde Editors at the below site :
http://mondediplo.com/dev_contact.php3?var_id=685

And you can send a message to the BBC from the below location :

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/2804227.stm

Below is the letter I sent to Le Monde.

The important thing is that the FOREIGN press hears from us
in GREAT numbers.

That's our best chance to break out of this media blackout.

Subject Evidence of Computer Fraud in U.S. Presidential Election
Dear Le Monde Editors,

The citizens of the World are counting on the foreign press to reveal the Truth of the extensive Computer Voting Fraud that occurred in the recent U.S. Presidential Election.

The extent of the fraud appears to be so large as to raise the very strong possibility that George Bush is not the legitimate President of the United States, but that the Crime of the Century was perpetrated on the American Public, with the help of an American media, that sees it's role as more of an American version of Pravda, than as an independent institution that is responsible for acting as a 'Check and Balance' force, by keeping the American public informed of what the Government is doing.

In this ever growing scandal, a new revelation has just been uncovered, as a Computer Programmer, who did work for a Republican Congressman in Florida, has signed a legal affidavit saying that Republican Tom Feeney paid him to design a 'Vote Switching' program that was used to steal the
Florida electoral votes for Mr. Bush.

This story can be found at the below website :

http://www.onlinejournal.com/Special_Reports/120604Mads...

The World needs to know the truth of what is going on in the United
States, if real Democracy is ever going to be restored in America.

We need Le Monde, the BBC, and other leading World Newspapers to
investigate these claims of fraud, and if they are found to have merit, to report them to the rest of the world.

The light of Democracy is going out in the United States, and we need Le Monde to help cast a light on the nefarious, and illegal,
subversion of the U.S. Election that the Bush administration has
perpetrated on both America, and the rest of the World.

Please help concerned American citizens by exposing the truth of this
World shattering scandal.

71. CAN THIS THREAD RECIEVE MODERATOR ATTENTION, PLEASE?
Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 10:32 AM by Us vs Them
It has been discussed above, the possibility of using Democratic Underground as a means by which to send an official press release or informal letter with the attempt to inform the international media of the depth of our situation, stateside.

Is this something that would be feasible, or do those who initially founded this website seek less of a distinct voice of opinion on this fray? I can understand the potential risks involved with speaking out publicly, however as a student of media, I can also think of no better time for any organisation to take a formal position against this situation.

We can go it alone, but when backed by a group, we are less likely to be ignored. Any letter or press release carrying the thoughts and feelings of 60,000+ members is an amazing proposition, and has the potential to gain attention, inform and educate, and possibly change the course of history in the process.

I look forward to a discussion on these matters, and I'm sure many else who have joined this thread do as well.

72. My letter to NPR's "Morning Edition" on their election theft story
While I agree that we need to continue to grow international media attention to our election theft, we also need to keep communicating with our own timid media whenever they stick their necks out and do an election theft story, as NPR's "Morning Edition" did this morning. And when they do, we need to both thank them AND point out any problems in their coverage. (Why did Common Cause give a forum for the MIT professor -- whose critique of Freeman's research has already been debunked -- so that NPR could use his "sound bites"? So here's my morning letter to NPR. I hope others will write them also.
----------
To Morning Edition:

Good to hear some coverage of the election theft on NPR this morning. Thank you for this overdue coverage. But I would like to see any documentation for the statement that the MIT professor made in your piece that electronic votes for Bush were switched by the machines for Kerry. There are over 37,000 reports of voting problems listed on the nonpartisan Election Incident Reporting System and I have seen NO REPORTS on that site which indicate that electronic voting machines erred for Kerry, anywhere, in any state. As we all know, if the voting machine "glitches" were a simple matter of machine error, we would expect that the errors would have favored Bush and Kerry about equally. Instead, ALL the reported errors on the EIRS site I have reviewed have favored Bush (by taking votes away from Kerry and assigning them to Bush or a third party candidate, or simply by erasing them entirely.)

If there have been such reports I have missed on EIRS, my guess is that they were filed weeks after the election when the Republicans began to see the massive election theft evidence mounting against them and felt compelled to file false reports of machine "glitches" favoring Kerry on the EIRS site. Fortunately, we can look at the dates when all EIRS reports were filed and interpret those late reports with caution.

Don't take my word for it. You can access the EIRS web-site yourself and review the complaints yourself. You can also read and review the affidavits that have been filed in Ohio which -- again -- report the multitude of problems that occurred in that ORANGE state, all of which favored Bush.

You should also be aware that the MIT professor's early critique of the U. of Pennsylvania's Dr. Freeman's analysis of voting irregularities (specifically the disconnect between the exit polls and the "reported" vote in several swing states, which Freeman stated would have occurred by chance with 250 million to one odds) has already been debunked because the MIT professor (and his Cal Tech colleagues) used the "adjusted" exit poll information instead of the raw exit poll information which was still available on the CNN site at 11:00 pm on election night, before the exit pollers' computer server "crashed" and they felt the need to "adjust" their results. And, as my letter to Morning Edition yesterday said, there is no excuse for the exit pollers still refusing to release their raw exit poll data to the American public -- no excuse whatsoever.

So thanks for finally putting a story on Morning Edition about this election theft. Unfortunately, it appears to be difficult for you and other MSM to report this story without continuing to be condescending about those of us who are convinced that this election was stolen. But, after all, the first American revolution was started by a "small but vocal" band of patriots who would no longer take injustice and tyranny quietly. Why should we be any different, despite the fact that we have television news (and their incessant coverage of meaningless basketbrawls and New York hawks without homes) to distract us? Some of us know what is important and, despite the monopoly on informed debate being wielded by the Republicans in Congress, we will not be silenced. To be silent is to be complicit and unpatriotic.

In closing, I would ask that NPR please keep looking at the primary sources in developing your future stories on this election theft and not simply take without critical review what (discredited) MIT professors and self-serving CYA Republican election officials have to say. There is evidence of fraud and election theft in many states -- at least six of which are now pursuing recounts. This is the most important story affecting our democracy in the past century and I pray that you will stay on top of it. And, as a longtime NPR supporter and fan, I would request that you bite your tongues when you feel the need (or receive the directive) to be dismissive of our genuine concerns.

78. Here some additional media outlets in Europe
Don't mean to be critical, but I think it will be more effective if it's more in Press Release form and less wordy. Some of the media will realy only read it, if it's short and concise the WHAT, WHO, WHEN and WHERE concept. Your first paragraph should say it all. Something like this:

Many Americans are extremely frustrated with the lack of coverage by US main stream media of the 2004 Ohio Presidential Election Vote Recount. Has the US “Free Press” been silenced?

83.  I AM OVERWHELMED! This simple idea has really grown.
Thank you all for the links you saved hours of work! I think this is the point we are at:

1.) We need to decide who this "letter" should come from.
...Would Democratic Underground wish to sponsor it?
...Should any public figures in the cause be asked to sponsor it?
...Should it just be signed with a group of names?

2.) We need to decide whether a letter, press release or both format would be best. Here is what I came up with after some sleep.
...A press release is more professional and easy to use for a journalist.
...A letter is a more personal plea for help.
...Both, could cover both bases.
...My personal thoughts are that what separates the 2 are the press release offers the journalist instant information and an instant story while a letter asks for the journalist IF WILLING TO HELP to look at the links and develop their own story. I was coming from this place when I originally wrote the letter.

3.) Should we use take advantage of the generous offer to use an "email blaster" or each individual send out different batches of the material.

Did I miss anything? Maybe we can use this for an outline?
Where do we go from here? Like I said, I'm overwhelmed.

On item 2) the answer depends on who your audience is so it would help if someone familiar with the target news media. This is a hard one.

121. I agree that a letter is more personal, but it should be
be short and concise like a press release. The media gets millions of PR emails per day and so you just don't want to run the risk that they hit the delete button, if the first paragraph doesn't tickle their interest.

Anyhow, many press releases are not used but instead generate the interest of a journalist and they will do the investigation as a result.

elections do you think there's any way he would join Jesse Jackson and Conyers? While I think it's great that the international press are notified, I'm also concerned that the majority of Americans know nothing. Wouldn't Carter put more legitimacy in this? Maybe he wouldn't be afraid to talk to the international press. Just a thought.

102. Thank you. I just sent this...
Dear President Carter,

On December 8, Rep. John Conyers hosted a congressional forum in which verifiable evidence of vote suppression and compelling indications of vote manipulation in Ohio were detailed by panels of witnesses. One witness who previously served as an international elections inspector recounted incidents in Ohio that would never have been permitted in El Salvador’s elections. Yet we ignore these disturbing reports from within our own borders?

C-SPAN and several radio stations carried the forum live. Concurrently, mainstream media covered stories such as Basketbrawl, Martha Stewart’s incarceration and Scott Peterson’s sentencing hearing. One day later, a search on CNN.com returns no hits regarding this forum and the only mention at MSNBC.com is on Keith Olbermann’s blog. ABC.com has a short story, but the headline does not appear on their home page. I am baffled by the media silence and appalled by the republican absence in this critical moment in American democracy.

This may well be the least partisan yet most important issue facing our nation today. We cease to function as a representative republic when we cannot guarantee the will of the people has been upheld. I am writing to ask you to join the call for integrity in our election process. This is not about hoping the other candidate eventually loses, but rather “It’s critical that we investigate and understand any and every voting irregularity anywhere in our country, not because it would change the outcome of the election but because Americans have to believe that their votes are counted in our democracy. We should be working together to reform the system because it should be unacceptable to anyone, Democrat or Republican, that in the United States many people still don’t have full confidence in the integrity of the voting process. I want every vote counted in this election, but I also want to make sure there are no questions or doubts in future elections. That’s not too much to ask in the world’s greatest democracy and model for free elections.” (John F. Kerry)

Perhaps the media will cover this crucial issue if such a distinguished voice as yours is added to the appeal for transparent and unblemished elections.

Best Regards,...

113. So, a fair summary of this PRIMARY SOURCE could read
, with a kick, something along these lines. And full of quotes. I'm thinking that an appendix of such primary source documents, summarized, could be attached to the release. Another such would be the letter to Blackwell of Dec 2 (published Dec 4) from Rep. John Conyers, Jr. and the House Committee on the Judiciary with its 34 questions. Also transcripts from the (various) hearings and such hard numbers and especially graphs or whatever illustrations as may be accesible...

--
Summary of the preliminary findings of the Election Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) - ref. http://www.osce.org/documents/odihr/2004/11/3779_en.pdf - on the US Elections of 2 Nov 2004. Note that the Mission was terminated at the moment the polls closed - {this is correct, isn't it - no observation of the counting?}.

The EOM calls attention to "a number of significant issues" threatening the idea that "the will of the people, freely and fairly expressed through periodic and genuine elections, is the basis of the authority and legitimacy of all government."

In particular, the EOM observed the following during the pre-electoral period:

1. "Allegations about voter disenfranchisement and so-called voter suppression were ... widely aired. It was claimed that such practices included non-processing of voter registration applications, the improper removal of eligible voters from voter lists, harassment and intimidation of voters." However, "while recognizing the seriousness of the above allegations, the EOM was not provided with first-hand evidence to substantiate {or otherwise} them or to demonstrate that such practices were widespread or systematic."

2. There were "no uniform standards for processing absentee ballots."

3. In a number of states, citizens who have been convicted of any felony (a criminal offence more serious than a misdemeanor) suffer a "restriction on the right to vote {which} is not made proportionate to the seriousness of the criminal offence," while, in general, "voters in different states do not enjoy equal suffrage."

4. The regulations on provisional ballots are "ambiguous as to whether the voter must cast the ballot in his/her allocated precinct for the provisional ballot to be counted" and as such are open to abuse. In fact "deadlines for verification and counting of provisional ballots vary widely from state to state and have the potential to delay announcement of final results at the federal level."

5. Furthermore, "there are no uniform certification procedures."

And during the election itself:

1. "Long queues and pressure on poll workers at some polling stations ... deterred or prevented some voters from participating in the election." - {disenfranchisement or lack of universal suffrage}.

2. Some "poll workers {may not have} received sufficient training to perform their functions," and there were doubts about the "secrecy of the vote" in some precincts, since "political party observers were present in many polling stations, although domestic non-partisan observers often had no legal right to such access. "The EOM also noted in this context that "the way in which election administrators are appointed may raise questions of possible conflict of interest." - {possible intimidation and dirty tricks}.

3. The EOM observed "considerable confusion and varying approaches from one state to another regarding the use of provisional ballots." - {open to abuse}

4. There were "faults and breakdowns of DRE (direct recording electronic) machines" and many voters had "difficulties with newer voting technologies." - {must be investigated}

In general, the EOM:

1. Observed that "Allegations of electoral fraud and voter suppression, primarily among minorities, were widely reported and presented to the EOM in the pre-election period."

2. Recommends the "prompt introduction of a paper audit trail" in all precincts.

3. Regrets that EOM observers were permitted "in a number of states, sometimes only in specific counties," while "in other states, access was not possible or was limited... " {elipsis in the original}

4. Suggests the following concerns should be addressed:
- "provisional ballots"
- "problems with DRE (direct recording electronic) machines"
- "polling stations lacking the capacity to ensure a reasonably prompt throughput of voters"
- "voting {during} ... working hours"

129. IMPORTANT: MORE BLASTER INFO
I see many people are posting letters in foreign languages (makes sense). I can set up separate sections (pages) for the different letters. The only drawback with this is people would wind up sending more emails to reach the same number of media then if all the letters were in one language (english). However, it would still be much more efficient then if someone was sending out emails individually. For example, you may group all french speaking media from: France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, etc.

Finally, if it seems like a lot of work to set up a blaster, you are right. But keep in mind that once it is set up, it becomes a tool that can be "reloaded" with different letters (messages) as time passes. I hope the shrub is dethroned, but if not there will be many more times we may need to ask for foreign coverage (environment, war, etc.)

So keep your chin up, organize your work-teams here, and just do it. :)

Please PM me if you have any questions, and be sure to go use the National Media Blaster if you haven't already done so. It was just loaded with a new Conyers related letter(s) a few hours ago. So not only will you learn more about how the blaster works; you will also be telling our media to cover the Election Fraud.

take care...

Tom

132. Yes, But I highly recommend against it
It's easy to eliminate (I just remove the "button", and of course post no letter for it).

Here's part of a PM I just sent last night to someone that applies to this:

"What you would email to someone you knew personally, first informing them about "what's going on"; then asking them to come use the blaster, and then tell everyone they know too, etc. (This emailing of "friends" may actually wind up being the more important result of all this than the MSM contact part.)"

The reason I made this comment is that the more experienced I get in all this emailing/media stuff, the more I realize that our ultimate goal and challenge is to inform/educate, and hopefully prod to action the American public. "They" get away with all this because only 20% of the public are even aware there is a problem. The main reason I don't eliminate the blasters and focus exclusively on a resource center to help people send out personal, or chain emails is that the media adds much more credibility if they tell the same story. So both personal (to friends), and blasting are very valuable.

At this point, I am actually looking for ways to elevate the likelihood that people who come to my site to blast, also inform the people they know.

Lastly, I realize that some people will prefer not to send out the message to people they know, that's why it will always remain a secondary option.

After reading this, and discussing it with your team, you opt for no friend letter, I will gladly set it up that way for you.

143. media lists
How do we parcel this media lists? Should restrict to
selective media based on some criteria (pl). What should those criteria be? I can think of one: willing to do investigative reporting on controversial issues. Might be good to have people familiar with media, if available. For instance for Canadian media,
someone who knows something about Canadian media, in particular.
Anyone from Canada on this thread btw?

I borrowed from another thread (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x115227)

But we need something set up for contributions.
Who knows how to do that?

147. If DU could sponsor this
and have an online donations page, we could get this in less than an hour. Will Pitt could write the press releases (pretty please??) and those who speak multiple languages could translate them!

148. You could check with DU and see if they would be willing
I'd be happy to donate and Will Pitt would be a good one to get involved. I would still take the basic letter and email it in addition to the press release. I have a rational for that which I spoke to back a ways.

I don't think we can do too much!

154. Was thinking of of utilizing more than one
letter 'archetype' (e.g. one more restrained in it's content
and another with few limits-in other words more controversial).

Better to get something in the news even if it's not quite what you want than nothing at all. If William Pitt would help out he could help steer this in the best direction. My head is getting foggy (I'm tired).

Something from DU. It might be better for me to just take the letter and email it out to some of the email addresses we have collected then concentrate on the Pitt one. Sound alright?

170. Fight against intellectual lazyness

Hi

I've read now your whole thread. :-b

I think a plea to the foreign newspapers would be a help. I send here informations to german speaking newspapers and magazines and it's like running against a wall. I don't know what's on there?

A problem is for sure the dependence from the press agencys... Who controls them? Karl Rove? It seems so...

Journals just get their informations from press agencys - a n d they have their correspondents in U.S. But they are just reading the big newspapers, I guess, looking CNN... So it's a devilish circle. I guess they are n o t in DU... ;-)

Another problem is the "intellectual lazyness" (Keith Olbermann) of journalist. There is somehow a conventional thinking (psychological phenomenon), you know: It's over... Bush won so clear. a.s.l. It's like lead which tears to the ground.

Journalists are normally very cynical and also opportunistic, they are not great characters, "fighters", with civil courage...

So I guess everything we can do is to i n f o r m them, over and over. But they just take it serious if it comes in an objective, serious style.

A plea is also another idea - which has a different effect.

Please EVERYBODY comes to our new forum, where we discuss these things. Let's work together!

I think we are all on the same ship... Let's start.

171. I hear you, thats why the basic "letter" format was the best choice
for me. Press releases are professional and convenient whereas letters are personal and would require them to develop their own story. All I can hope for is some take an interest or BEGIN to open their ears to what is out there.

Either that or the nation names and a list of possible target media.
I tried sending out an e-mail to a bundle of Canadian media once before and it didn't work. Any suggestions?

180. The final letter if you want to use any of it.
Edited on Sat Dec-11-04 03:43 AM by Alizaryn
Here's the final letter is you want to use any or all of it. Just put your name in at the bottom. with the email lists, the trick i think is to not leave a space between the different ones ex: jk@lll@aol.com;kjlll@aol.com with a semicolon between them. worked alright for me

So far we have, Britain, newzealand, australia and germany. I've been getting the email addresses from this thread mostly.

Keep me posted!

Without the MAINSTREAM media covering this issue as something other then a filler, it will be difficult to force the Republicans to be accountable to this process. This will continue to enable the Republicans in power and much of the public to ignore the whole situation.

Further, we need your help to use your free press to ask why it is that this current administration in the United States can find the election process in the Ukraine abhorrent, yet chooses to ignore potentially widespread election irregularities in the United States.

We need your help if you can find it within yourselves to give. If you have any questions or need for information we will be glad to help.

Sincerely,
your name(Alizaryn) and many other members from Democratic Underground

178. Coverage in France and Germany

A friend sent this to me. I don't know if it's like in the US where the mainstream media is ignoring it, or if these are indy and alternative media.

“Le Votergate” is now a hotly debated topic in France:

It is also receiving extensive treatment in German

184. hmpf

Hi, ceiberweiber.at is very alternative (website) - actually I got the info of election fraud there.

But "Der Standard" and "Die Presse" are big newspapers from Austria.

But, as you see, there are no real reports of this case in this papers - I hope that "Die Presse" will cover one time the fraud story because their weekend-magazine was very interested in my article.

I just made a search in Google-news and there are some very few stories about "Democrats want to recount Ohio".

But there are A LOT articles of the deaths at a heavy metal concert in Ohio...

For me it's still a scandal.
