3. Good
Nelson is up for re-election in '06, and he knows he has a bullseye on his back. Kathrine Harris is talking about running for his seat.

Every Democrat and non-neocon republican has no future in Congress after their next election. The neocons will rig the machines to 'vote' them all out and replace them with raving wingnuts. If the Dems and repubs don't recognize this and stand up NOW, their days in Congress are numbered. It has nothing to do with the voters and everything to do with this administration.

I think their site is a month off. It can't be a month old, because Conyers wasn't even there then.

33. It just says "need for investigation" -- no reference to Conyers
http://www.changeforamerica.com/community/node/view/1803

It just says "aides said they were looking into it and that Nelson had agreed to the need for investigation". I don't think it is in response to the Conyers hearing, and it does not reflect any commitment to support Conyers' efforts.

39. there is a difference between agreeing to look into something and , . .
standing up before the Senate to sponsor an objection. I'm glad he is examining it, but I wouldn't be so quick to conclude he is fully aboard. The article linked only says he will look into it. Emails and phone calls may help push him in the right direction.

14. As I said, I reposted this from farmgirl at someone else's request
His support of Conyer's investigation does NOT mean he supports the CHALLENGE.

He may be a good candidate to do this:

As Keith put it:

"But the challenge itself, even if it garnered exactly one vote each from the Senate and House, would be a powerful protest, and an earnest signal that a full investigation of what happened in Ohio should take place, even after the inauguration. It could even be relevant, legally, in terms of the impounding of voting machines and records, to serve as the basis for some later examination to determine what, if anything, failed - and how it could be prevented from failing again."

16. Nelson can kiss my butt, he approved the "New Freedom Initiative"
calling for mandatory mental health testing of schoolchildren, without parental consent.

this link does not mention Nelson, but I saw his name in a list here on DU of the few Democrats who approved the omnibus appropriations bill that included funding this fascist measure.

23. I sent him a letter regarding this and here is what I got back:
Dear Ms. :

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about the recent election.

As you may know, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) plans to investigate voter registration, electronic voting machines, and the processing of provisional ballots. The Election Assistance Commission
(EAC) also has announced plans to hold public hearings on voter registration guidelines, statewide registration databases, and provisional
balloting. The EAC is currently receiving election data from across the
country, including information on the use of provisional ballots.

Before the election, I supported several initiatives and legislation to ensure the accuracy of electronic voting machines. I will continue to monitor the situation, and I await the GAO's and EAC's findings so that we can improve our nation's voting process.

I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this issue. I will continue my efforts so all citizens have the opportunity to vote and feel confident that their votes are counted.

P.S. From time to time, I compile electronic news briefs highlighting key issues and hot topics of particular importance to Floridians. If you'd like to receive these e-briefs, visit my Web site and sign up for them at http://billnelson.senate.gov/newpages/newsletter.cfm .

27. The letter seems to say that he's not gonna do a thing ....
typical political bs. "I supported" ... "I will continue to monitor".... "I await"

Doesn't sound like boots on the ground in Ohio to me. Maybe he needs a little pressure to get off his butt and get involved.

28. Hmmm...
Seems like you guys are over-reacting here. I don't understand how you are interpreting his support of the investigation as evidence that he will challenge the credibility of the Ohio electors. Seems to me that he is simply saying he supports the investigation. He's not saying that he believes there was fraud. He's not even saying that he believes that there was foul play in the Ohio election. A simple non-committing statement that he supports an investigation is all I read from the information presented. I do hope that he or a number of Senators will stand up and grab a pair and defend our democracy. I'm not holding my breath however, as I can see Kerry insisting that other Senators not stand up when and if House Democrats oppose the credibility of the Ohio electors. I'm anticipating another scene similar to 2000 -- it will be then that I will no longer need convincing that Bush & Co have indeed killed our belovéd liberty and democracy.

36. Agree, however, I've decided to send the following...
....message to Senator Nelson.

Perhaps, just perhaps 'standandfight', somewhere in the conscience of some of our elected representatives they will recognize what they have actually sworn to do, and they will find the courage to act, accordingly.

Perhaps, just perhaps, they will realize that millions of those who happen to be 'the more perfect union' -- us, the people -- are fully prepared to stand with them and insist that the current process halt, be repaired, and then allowed to proceed.

Why not truly 'make history' in the next few weeks, rather than having it made for us by folk who have no allegiance to our Constitution or our American franchise of democracy.

Why not?

______________________

The Honorable Bill Nelson
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20515
By FAX 202.228.2183

9 December 2004

Dear Senator Nelson,

I am very proud of Congressman Conyers leadership as evidenced yesterday. He proved, once again today, that he is among the few who have the courage to attempt to defend our franchise of democracy from an insidious, persistent and, if we don't stop the process now, successful undermining of the most critical aspect of our Constitution -- we the people determine the more perfect union by our ability to be our government, by our vote as to who that government is.

I urge you to stand with Congressman Conyers and call a halt to the current election process. It is not valid. No one has won anything. The people are about to lose everything -- because of those who were systematically suppressed in casting their ballot, and, even more harmfully, by the reality that at least 30 % of those who voted have no way of knowing if their vote was counted as they intended.

I have included a letter I sent to Senator Kerry yesterday by Fax and I plead with you to go to Senator Kerry and urge him to recognize that we cannot wait; that tomorrow dawns on a totalitarian "USA," if today we do not stop those who threaten our American franchise of Democracy.

I have asked Senator Kerry, as I am asking you and Congressman Conyers and all your colleagues -- halt this invalid process and prove to the world that we have recognized a serious deficiency in our American franchise of democracy, we are going to repair it, and then we the people will know, whether we agree with the outcome of an election, we know that the process was fair and able to be validated beyond any reasonable doubt.

Together, we shall prevail.

It was the Washington office and his office wasn't aware of his stance on this issue. It could be that someone's wishful thinking got the best of them on this but I hope everything pans out. Nelson's aide also wasn't aware of DU but sounded pretty interested in this story and DU itself.
