Most kids in the rural south run with racially mixed bunches until middle school. With puberty comes conformity and with conformity comes all the bigotry. Some get over it, like Carter did. Some remain stuck in the Jim Crow past, like Trent Lott and the rest of the GOP luminaries in Dixie.
