Party chair leaves post after losses in election

After a year-and-a-half of swimming against Ector County’s political
tides, Democratic Party Chairman Lori White is quitting her post,
licking her wounds and getting away from it all, at least for a couple
of weeks.

(snip)

In Ector County, Bush beat Kerry soundly — 27,503 votes to 8,579 — and
37 percent of all Republicans who went to the polls voted a straight-
party ticket, giving the local Republican candidates an added boost,
she said.

“I wasn’t surprised by the outcome,” she admitted.

This time around, about 5,000 more people voted for Bush than they did
in 2000 — an increase local Democrats just couldn’t overcome.

“A lot of those people came out specifically to vote for George W.
Bush,” she said. “They love him like a brother and think it was the
Christian thing to do to vote for him. That was the big push for
Republicans, and they did a good job of getting that point out. I knew
it was going to happen.”

However, independents and swing voters made the local races more
interesting, she said, keeping races for district attorney, county
attorney and tax assessor-collector tighter.

(snip)

Johnson said many independent conservatives told him after the Nov. 2
election that they voted against local Democratic candidates because
of their disgust with the national party, which he described as being
disorganized.

1. Can't argue with them
on the disorganized part. Nationally we do look disorganized.

2. I wish that Kerry had shown up in Texas
a couple times. I think that would have helped other Dems.
