Not because I'm too bright, just because it was undemocratic.

15. Still scratching my head...and wondering... |

I was at work as well.
I too was dumbfounded about what was going on and remained so for some time after that...
I've always been a little slow on the uptake.

I was in my car just about to turn the corner onto my childrens (ex-wife) street when I heard on the radio that the recount was stopped. I couldn't believe it!

and yes - I knew we were in trouble. I didn't think the US Supreme Court would rule in favor of Gore anyway - and I didn't understand at the time why the that court was involved either. It was upsetting enough to know that Gore won and Bush was going to be in office illegally, but I later became more disturbed over the media's handling of the matter & the fact that none of the Senators seemed to back him. Now in retrospect, Lieberman was not the right choice for VP. I can't tell, still yet, if he knows whether he is a republican, democrat or one of those republicrats.

I was so stunned I couldn't drive and pulled over, sat there, and cried. Awful, awful day since ti changed my world view. I had thought of the Supremes as just that, something above and beyond the nastiness. Like august Olympian creatures. That naive view was shattered that day never to return.

...and did NOT realize that democracy was in danger. From the present vantage point, my naivety at the time is hard to fathom. It was another life altogether.

13. I suppose I was in denial - didn't realize the permanence |

I thought that a particular set of circumstances had given the Republicans the opportunity to use their natural aggression and lack of ethics to steal the election. I was appalled, but comforted by the idea that such circumstances would not occur often - hopefully never again.
I did not realize until this election, or 9/11, that they would create and recreate the necessary circumstances unless some overwhelming force overcame them, or until they destroyed themselves thru their own greed and arrogance. In the latter case, it is my fervent hope that they do not destroy our country in the process, like Hitler did to Germany.

Let's hope they destroy themselves soon enough. I think they will, through their hubris.
