Government Must Do More to Prevent Future Voter Fraud
Sunday, December 12, 2004
By Norman Willox

-snip-
While Americans this year were fortunate to avoid the drawn-out legal battles of
the preceding presidential election, the close margins in some key states and concerns
over inconsistent election standards illustrate the continued risk of having election
processes that vary from state and state, and often from county to county.

With future close elections likely, our democratic process is particularly
vulnerable to voter fraud (search) and abuse that we are not yet doing enough to
stop.

In many ways, the challenge we now face is similar to one resolved years ago by
financial institutions, credit issuers and insurance companies. In order to verify the
identity of individuals opening new accounts, these businesses worked to develop
systems to perform what’s known as “information-based identity authentication.”

-snip-
Ultimately, the principle of democratic governance is at stake in voter fraud and
abuse. While information-based identity authentication will not provide a magic bullet
to solve the problem of voter fraud, it does provide one vital component of a
comprehensive system to ensure that elections are carried out in a fair and accurate
manner.

2. Why do I get the feeling
he's laying out an argument in favor of a national ID card?

6. or something worse, like implanted chips.
of course they'll piggy back on the issue for their hobby horses, but it's great they are talking about it. they've actually had several 'discussions' *FauxNews style* on this, covering it in their way at least.

9. "Information-based identity authentication” - search the FOX site & ...
it links that phrase with -http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,131427,00.html
snip/
The Sept. 11 Commission (search) report reaffirmed the importance of protecting individual identities from theft or unauthorized use by criminals or terrorists — and the costs of failing to do so.

Moreover, statistical modeling and scoring techniques developed for the financial services industry to prevent credit card fraud can be applied to identify authentication.

For cripes sake, they want you to pass a credit check in order to vote? If my credit sucks or I'm not credit worthy because my wages are too low, do I get to vote? Fox is talking like they have all of a sudden developed a voice of reason? Fuck Fox!

Yeah, an in depth, heavy duty national ID card!

4. Much creepier than ID card - card of beliefs.
Card of possible intents, card of MINORITY REPORT. To be safe - think NO "EVIL"THOUGHT.

5. I'm concerned that FOX NEWS
has done a flip-flop here. They have had nothing good to say about election issues in general. Clearly they are trying a different tact that is a bit closer to reality.

Instead of "We Won. Get Over It." They are starting to say something that sounds a little more reasonable. And they were careful to not mention any of the "hot" recounts, Dems or R*s. It just feels like a strategy to me.

Don't these R*s all march to the beat of Rove's "talking points"?

7. “information-based identity authentication.”
Is this a reference to the fingerprint you have to give to cash a check drawn upon their institution? Or worse, as other posters in the thread suggest, retinal scanning, dna, chipped?

“information-based identity authentication.” has no meaning in my cognition.

8. Just because you're paranoid, it doesnt mean ...
This is definitely the GOP line on fraud.

<freeper mode on>
It's all them illegal wetbacks and darkies
that the rats want to use to stuff the
voter rolls with. We've got to keep 'em
off the rolls and have good clean 'merkin
elections, just like we used to. Can't we get
some smart guys like Giuliani and his pal
Kerik to head up a firm to keep some good
clean records of all them degenerates?
<freeper mode off>

John Fund, the ratfuck from the WSJ editorial
page, has a book out, no doubt expounding all
sorts of useful ideas on the subject.

I think I'll give it a pass.

And we've got a LexisNexis exec pushing the
whole idea. Are they going to give the whole
job to the credit ratings firms to manage?

10. They're doing some CYA.
It might be an argument for national id cards. But it might be that they know it's not going to go away so they need to throw us a bone in case it actually blows up. That way they can say, "See, we coverd it? We just had no idea how big the story was!

11. Hmm...
I think they're just trying to define the term 'vote fraud' for their viewership before anyone else gets a real chance to. They generally feed people a "talking point" three times a day for a week before the attack dogs are let loose. Otherwise everyone would see them for the assholes they are.
