Ex-O.C. resident picks up where Kerry left off
John Kerry bailed out of Ohio early the morning after the election, calling off his legal team and his election watchers and announcing his concession. But many others continue to question the Ohio ballot tally, with the issue staying alive in part because of former Fullerton resident Tim Carpenter.
If Kerry had won Ohio, he'd have been elected. There are plenty of Democrats angry that Kerry gave up on the state so readily, especially given the allegations of voting irregularities. Among the examples cited, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report: long lines and too few voting machines at polling places in black neighborhoods; early exit polls showing Kerry in the lead; reports that likely Democratic voters were denied absentee ballots or given false information about where or when to vote; and allegations that provisional ballots weren't provided or counted.
"There are clearly efforts of voting suppression," Carpenter told the Buzz. The longtime Orange County activist moved to Massachusetts two years ago. He was a top organizer for Dennis Kucinich's presidential bid and is political director of the recently formed Progressive Democrats of America.
His organization pushed for - and helped win - a hearing on the Ohio issue by minority members of the House Judiciary Committee last week. The group is a key part of a movement supporting an Ohio recount despite the fact that final tallies were announced Dec. 6.
