What David Cobb said at Conyers hearing today
Edited on Mon Dec-13-04 02:00 PM by dotcosm
Here is a very rough transcript of what David Cobb reported at the Conyers hearing today: There were alot of dropouts on the audio, so some was garbled, so it's not a completely exact transcript, but darn close.

************************************

Rep Conyers, I have the most recent, breaking information, it will be brief but I think very important.

It's probably the most ? incident that has been related to my campaign, it was related only on Sunday, Dec 12th, regarding a very shockig event that occurred last Friday, Dec 10th. The person who is reporting it, at this point, wishes to remain anonymous but I will bring it to this committee because this must be investigated

A representative from Triad Systems came into this county's BOE offices unannounced on this Friday. He said he was just stopping by to see if they had any questions about the upcoming recount. He then headed into the back room where the Triad ?? that is, the machine that COUNTS the ballots, is kept.

The Triad representative then told them that there was a problem with the system, that the system had a bad batttery and had quote "lost all it's data" endquote

He then took the computer apart and started swapping parts in and out of it and in another spare ??? (tower PC?) in the room

(garbled -- something about having spare parts in his coat?)

...he finally reassembled everything and said that it was working, but that not to turn it off.

He then asked which precincts would be counted in the 3% reount test, and the ones which had been selected, as if it had the right number of votes, was relayed to him, and he did something else to the tabulator.

The Triad Systems representative suggested that if the hand recount had to match the machine count exactly, and since it would be hard to memorize the several numbers that would be need to get the count to come out exactly right, that they should post this series of numbers on the wall where they would not be noticed by observers, such that to make them look like employee information or something similar. The people doing the hand count could then, he said, (garbled -- record? those numbers?) no matter what they actually counted in the ballots.

This would then quote "match" endquote the tabulator report for this precinct exactly.

Conyers then replied: "David Cobb I need you to arrange a meeting with our staff immediately as soon as possible so we can go into detail on this matter"

edit: for typos but i'm sure some remain

1. I have nothing but respect for Cobb
first as the Green nominee he made sure he didn't campaign in states which held the key to the election. Second, he has really been pushing the vote fraud problems.

He seems like a good guy.

6. This is outragous! If it were a basic ballot box, would the manufacturer
of the ballot box be allowed to access it behind closed doors and do anything to it?

I don't think so...yet why is it okay that this private for profit corporate employee can access this, no questions asked?

And if the battery was bad, why now, right before the recount?

the central tabulators there is no way to discover the actual votes. So then what do we do? We'd have to prove fraud and ask for a new election, because otherwise there' no way to know the real vote tally.

Wasn't this one of the requests in John Kerry's letter, to be allowed to choose the precincts?

Are we being duped again with another "Don't look here, look there" maneuver?

Let's hope this anonymous source got all the pertinent info on this Triad repairman. I wonder if this is legit ? (Wouldn't THAT be something! ) It seems almost too good to be true , and you know what they say...
Who's going to be in charge of picking which 3% will be counted? Why isn't this going to be completely random ? Why are they disseminating this info early, to those who have the power/opportunity to then muck with the machines to match up with the alleged vote totals? Where can we get the info on the 3% districts - and then who can make a video log of everyone coming into contact with the tabulators ? HELP !!!!!!

My jaw still hurts from hitting the floor!

Shouldn't that room be guarded now? Where are the police or other authorities?

Impound the machine and have a computer forensics expert look it over (assuming that's who'd do that kind of thing).

How 'bout getting fingerprints, etc. in case the name of the perpetrator is unknown. This is a CRIME SCENE for heaven's sake!

I'm still shaking my head in disbelief and fearing what the other shoe will look like.

Soon, we will storm this facility and if we can just get to the red button on the control panel, we can destroy all of the black box voting machines. If only that evil Dick Cheney would put down his ray gun.

51. Conyer's Hearing Mon. 12/13
I just sent this message to Bob Fitrakas, editor of FreePress in Ohio. He's been on top of the election problems there, so I hope he responds.

Dear Bob Fitrakas,

Someone listening to the hearings today, posted this on Democratic Underground today:

---"Here is a very rough transcript of what David Cobb reported at the Conyers hearing today: There were a lot of dropouts on the audio, so some was garbled, so it's not a completely exact transcript, but darn close.
***********************************

Rep Conyers, I have the most recent, breaking information, it will be brief but I think very important.

It's probably the most ? incident that has been related to my campaign, it was related only on Sunday, Dec 12th, regarding a very shocking event that occurred last Friday, Dec 10th.

The Triad representative then told them that there was a problem with the system, that the system had a bad battery and had quote "lost all it's data" endquote

He then took the computer apart and started swapping parts in and out of it and in another spare ??? (tower PC?) in the room

(garbled -- something about having spare parts in his coat?)

...he finally reassembled everything and said that it was working, but that not to turn it off.

He then asked which precincts would be counted in the 3% recount test, and the ones which had been selected, as if it had the right number of votes, was relayed to him, and he did something else to the tabulator.

Conyers then replied: "David Cobb I need you to arrange a meeting with our staff immediately as soon as possible so we can go into detail on this matter"----

I presume you were at the hearing. Can you verify that the above is factual, and, if so, can you fill in some of the blanks and give us more information on this. Obviously, since the mainstream media is ignoring/dismissing the Ohio recount, we out here who question what went on in the Ohio vote don't have access to news of what's happening on the ground out there.

I'd appreciate hearing from you on this, and if you have clarification on the above complaint, that you send or copy your response to http://www.buzzflash.com http://www.democraticunderground.com and to http://www.dailykos.com, as well as publishing this information in your Free Press.

Thank you very much. I'm not an Ohioan, but I'm one of millions across this county that believe our Presidential election has been stolen again, and I'm not going to silently sit by and let it happen!

Sincerely, Jo Ann Simon Camden, Maine

I posted about this too but didn't see it was mentioned

This is very serious and here is a real chance..

Who knows what happens when Conyers meets with the staff. The way this is looking now the DNC might just have thrown the election on purpose, and I hate to say that. Maybe they will tell Cobbs to shut up about it in the private meeting.. who knows?

59.  Triad Systems Bush Connection
"representative from Triad Systems"

FYI

The Triad Systems Bush connection may not be as well known as the Diebold/Bush connection for most folks...so here is a quick review.

Triad Systems recently changed its name to Activant.

The reason Triad gives for the name change is that "We felt that it was time to create a new name that would better reflect the company's evolution and market position"

All of Activant’s outstanding stock is owned by its parent company, Activant Solutions Holdings Inc. Activant’s outstanding equity securities are majority owned by affiliates of Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, Incorporated.

On Tom Hicks of Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, Incorporated from topplebush.com

Tom Hicks is a Dallas billionaire and investment banker who began raiding the University's public funds after the University refused to invest in his dental company in the early 90's. Hicks first appeared on the public scene when he donated $17,500 to Ann Richards, Texas governor at the time. He was subsequently appointed to the Board of Regents by Governor Richards in 1994.

After Ann Richards was defeated in 1994 by George W. Bush, Hicks shifted his heavy donations to Bush. Hicks gave $146,000 to Bush in both of his gubernatorial campaigns. In return for the gratitude, Bush approved legislation to form UTIMCO in 1995. Hicks had used a full-court press strategy, spending between $50,000 to $110,0001 in lobbying and using with the powerful lobbying team Vinson and Elkins, who represents several Texas business interests, to achieve this dream.

Conveniently for both men, Bush appointed Hicks as the first chair to UTIMCO, which began the tradition of tit-for-tat management and good-ol' boy favoritism that has defined the relationship between UTIMCO and Texas politics since. In 1998, Hicks would make Bush a multi-millionaire by purchasing the Texas Rangers. In addition, Hicks' company, Hicks, Muse, Tate, & Furst, Inc., is now Bush's number 4 career patron. The company is still donating to the GOP; Rick Perry has received $283,481 from Hicks Muse, with another $176,500 coming from Charles Tate . Hicks's brother Steven has also thrown in $138,516.

For several years, UTIMCO acted in secrecy under the protection of the Texas Attorney General, which facilitated the process of questionable investments in return for political favors. UTIMCO invested some $525 million in assets run by Hicks associates and other major GOP donors. After the Houston Chronicle exposed such insider dealings in a 1999 article, Tom Hicks resigned from the board.

Investments made by UTIMCO under the watch of Tom Hicks include the following, as reported by the Multinational Monitor, Texas for Public Justice, and Bushwatch.net:
• The Carlyle Group: the Group's partners include Bush Sr. and ex-Secretary of State James Baker III.
• Maverick Capital Fund: Major project of the Wyly brothers.
• Bass Brothers Enterprises: The Bass family donated $210,000 to Bush's campaign through PAC's, with $273,000 from themselves, and they invested $25 million in Bush's Harken Oil venture.
• Kohlberg Kravis Roberts: This corporate buyout firm would soon join Hicks Muse in a $1.5 billion takeover of Regal Cinemas.
• Evercore Partners: Evercore and Hicks joined forces for a $900 million television buyout.
• American Security Partners: Landed a contract with UTIMCO months after selling several radio stations to Tom Hicks.
• Wand Partners and Inverness Management: Firms run by friends of Tom Hicks, such as former frat brother Bruce Schnitzer.

Another notable company not covered by the Multinational Monitor was an investment in Capstar Broadcasting, run by R. Steven Hicks- Tom's brother. The brothers have had strong interests in national communications companies, and some deals that have been proposed (some sought after by trustbusters) have reached the billions. Clear Channel Communications/AMFM (owned by Hicks Muse with Tom Hicks as the vice-chair) is the largest chain of radio stations in the U.S. Hicks Muse also owns the second largest chain in the U.S., Chancellor Media.

64. This sentence seems a bit odd to me.
"that they should post this series of numbers on the wall where they would not be noticed by observers, such that to make them look like employee information or something similar".

This appears to me, to look like there could have been a memo passed out previously, and the technician reminded them of the instructions and to post the info. All to make their job easier and faster.

My thoughts anyway.

65. A casual observation regarding the "bad battery..."
The Triad representative then told them that there was a problem with the system, that the system had a bad battery and had quote "lost all it's data" endquote

Wouldn't you think that something as important as a national election would warrant a new battery, or a new battery that proved to be operational? I find it difficult to believe they used an old battery. You would think the contract to place these machines would include the insertion of a new, operational battery. I just don't buy the "bad battery" story as a cover story, and I hope all Americans don't either.

You'd think they could come up with something more believable...
